D.E. FILTRATION FOR HEAVY FEEDING. FISH & NPS CORALS

Lots of valid points here. Gonna look more into DE filtration benes and drawbacks. Sounds like a phenomenal filtration setup in a proper setting but most settings it seem would require pool sized pumps/filter on a pool sized tank to be cost effectively efficient. (also an ex pool guy here and dang does DTE filters work well) But say medium-large reef system over 150g total volume used one. The frequency of filter changes seems too high. Also the need to send fooded water bypassing the
main system filter during feeding is not only a partial burden but also defeats the purpose in some systems. A properly built sump on a healthy system wont even need filter
socks. But even the perfect setup
lacks one thing. The bacterial benefits are what make it so powerfully attractive specially considering the filter media itself (given an affordable/useful filter)is so cheap for such a small system. Also seeing eheim abandon it bugs me, but it seems like equipment malfunctions that would prob cause nightmares for them might have been the cause of them discontinuing. Following. LF DTE Filter users here pretty bad. (one of us, one of us..)
 
All of the DE filters I have used have the media on the suction side of the pump. The pump starts cavitating as the media plugs and you get showers of microbubbles.
Not a problem with something you only use intermittently.
The video I posted from YouTube, use discharge of pump to filtrate. Better design, I think. Thanks for commenting, comrade

Tomorrow going to the Backwoods Lab, aka storage container. I'll recharge D.E. filter. Also added a skimmer, see how well it's working too. Stay tune

The whole house filter only needs 1-2 cups D.E., to charge, key is removing all air in filter. Charge it yesterday, ,this morning wash
at self service car wash filter #2 , so I replace cartridge filter when need to. So I have two cartridge filters, second one ready to use, when time comes. Then wash dirty one.
Forgot I overcharged filter instead of 1-2 cups, it had 6 cups. This was white filter not clear one. So had to charge in 7 days. Now should be 14 days minimum

This is very crude so do not laugh lol, but is this kind of how it is setup? Not everything in the correct place, but the basic idea of how you are utilizing the DE filter? Or is it HOB Skimmer and DE is the only means of filtration?

I will have biological filtration in addition to D.E. filter(mechanical filtration)

My tablet fell in water barrel, 5mo. ago, change battery, cannot add apps, everything else good. Wish my app's worked, then I can use your layout. In a few minutes show you layout. I keep tweaking it.

No hurry. Mine was just a rough draft and I assume you have a fuge and all that?
 
Don't laugh, orange square is pump to D.E., see chiller, and biological filtration lines. Going to stop return pump just 4 minutes before dosing food , return pump off 20-30min. Then restart. Two reasons 1. give colonies sometime to feed, 2. D.E. filtration and bio. filter more time to filter when feeding. Also(maybe) will stop return pump every 15min. Then on 15min. So filtration system filters water more throughly. My thinking.

Also, pump to D.E. filter, outside, easier to charge D.E. filter. Pump will be in a 5 gallon bucket but not submerged

Okay back to the question what does the sprinkler valve have to do with a DE filtration system here's the modified valve. I think I have all the parts, so I will try to go step-by-step on how I'm going to be diverting the filtration system this thread is based on without turning it off, of course . we're going to divert it like the Euphrates River was diverted by Cyrus the Great. Just not so large of a task as the Euphrates River. I won't be getting to technical or showing how I wire it up. I can only show you the door you have to open it

Here's solenoid valves. I'm only using two out of the three, normally open and normally closed, 100% continuous duty.

these solenoid valves will control modified sprinkler valve. valves will open and close the modified sprinkler valve

This pump will turn off when the sprinkler valve is closed and this pump will be located in the refugium that's where the DE filtration discharge will dump into. When I feed The NPS softies that's when the modified sprinkler valve will closed. Also the modified 5 pump doser is program to turn off the modified sprinkler valve, when I feed the corals for 45 minutes then the returned pump will start discharging into the display tank. The pump with the check valve it's tied into just before the modified sprinkler valve.

just so you know the modified sprinkler valve I was using it in 2017 turning off and on for different application but for aquarium use and it work perfect
 
So i add 5 gallon bucket in refugium. DE filter pump in there too. Trying to get as much of the water from the display tank through the DE filter if the filter ever gets clogged up the water overflows from the bucket into the refugium. The white cloth on the drain pipes is only to reduce splashing it's not any type of filter sock
