d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

Thanks, Rev.
And of course it's raining yet again.

Meanwhile, back on the tank front... looky what just showed up direct from Ecotech.
Guess I have another weekend project.

You upgrading all of your lights?

Dennis,

Can you explain why you went with 30's vs 15's?

I needed four pucks on a new tank and I bought 4 15's because there was no price point break on the XR15 vs the XR30. Seems to me like individual 15's would be better for maximizing control and redundancy. Interested to hear your thoughts.

Sure. :)
For one, I don't like the way twice the amount of smaller units looks compared to half the amount of larger units.
Second, I hang them front to back due to the deep dimension of my tank.
Third, i hang them closer than recommended anyway. Two 15's would suggest you want to spread the pucks farther from each other, which I do not.

Looking forward to seeing the lights over your tank, and your thoughts on them.

I need to get on this EcoTech band wagon, my G1s are well in need of something fresh

Italian Travertine.
Today should be done as I've already seen it, heck I did a rain angel :) on the finished patio during the down poor of a storm and my guys were sniffing  my icetea to make sure I could drive home.
Leave the pics to owner tonight ;)

Can you share how the radio show are mounted? What kind of mount is it? I have an Elos 100 and currently have only 1 XR30 Pro over it. I have a second XR30 Pro in my basement but haven't installed it because I don't have a real solution to add a second since I'm using the reefmounts XR30 mount

It's the Ecotech kit. You buy the RMS Track, the RMS Slides for each Radion, and the hanging kit.

Got one Radion G4 Pro installed tonite so I could compare them side by side.
Unfortunately, I don't have a par meter handy at the moment so this is just a visual comparison.
Later I'll test my par with all three and see how they stack up to the old numbers.

First, I was curious about the new power bricks.
On the left is the recent downsized brick from the G3 Pro. Some of you may already be familiar with these.
On the right is the new G4 brick. Obvious size difference.

Now here is a shot showing the G3 Pro on the left and G4 Pro on the right.
I went into Ecosmart live and made the new violet channel the same as the other blues and made the new white channel the same as the other white.
First thing I noticed is the overall brightness. The G4 definitely appears brighter to me.
Part of this is the fact that the lens hangs down below case. If you look at up at the lights, the G4 is a bit blinding. Actually, it almost makes you wonder if the G3 is turned on.
But the tank does appear more illuminated on that side.
Next, I noticed that the spread on the screen top is most definitely wider with the G4.
The lights are 16" off the top of the screen for reference.
And third, personally my favorite difference from a visual standpoint, is the color.
The best way I can describe it is the G4 feels more "full spectrum".
The white channel adds more of the yellow or white side of the spectrum and the violet seems to add more pink.
Running the Coral Lab AB+ program and like I said earlier, adding in the two extra channels on the G4, the G3 has that kind of washed out windex look where the G4 just has richer colors. You can see it in the rock. The rock on the left looks blue, and the rock on the right looks purple.
When both lights are on, it's subtle, but it's definitely there.

Now comes the fun part... lighting them up individually. :)
Both shots are taken with the same exact exposure, wb, etc.
No photoshopping, just a couple minor adjustments and the exact same adjustments applied to both photos.
The first pic is the G3, second is the G4.
The G3 barely lights up half the tank adequately, whereas the G4 is lighting up more like 3/4 of the tank.
There is obviously a lot more spread.
And now, you can really see the color difference.
You can probably tweak the channels to get the G3 closer to the G4, this is just me keeping the same AB+ program and adding in the two new colors.
Also, notice the spread front to back. The sand bed at the front is dark in pic 1, but lit up bright in pic 2.
Another thing to keep in mind is that my lights are hung front to back, so when just one is lit up, that's really just a one puck width.
The tank is 47" long.

That's it for now.
I'll get the others installed tomorrow.

I'll bring my par meter tomorrow.
I have to drop by any way for that million dollar check and to check on the guys as they couldn't finish the border as it was to wet due to the rain.

It appears to be a more focused, wider spread. If you look on the wall under the lights, the 3 has what looks like oddly spread shine. It's not really bright, it's just light spill. On the 4, you can see a very focused but wide spread light. It's like they really did their homework on getting every bit of usable light into the correct angle so they all match up. That's amazing. The difference shows for sure. Bet it is even better in person.

Exceptional build Dennis, words as "EPIC" fall short for this kind of stuff!!!.

I saw the link to this thread on the R2R Facebook page this morning and remembered your handle from a previous build; two and one half hours, three or four cups of coffee, a few detours to read on links of reference, and a couple smoke breaks later, and all I can say to you is these are the things that inspire us to become better reef keepers, so thank you for sharing, is a true motivation. :)

haha, glad you enjoyed it.
Tapatalk was blowing up my phone with all the post likes. ;)

Switched out my Aqua illumination hydras for 3 new Radion G4’s this morning. I love the new color spectrum. My corals and fish look much better. I have not used my par meter yet, probably do that next weekend. The lights spread is a lot better than my hydra’s. I chose the radiant color schedule to start with, running at 60%

My lights can in two weeks ago, but unfortunately one was DOA. Ecotech replaced the light within three days.
not to many companies that will do that for you.

With the lenses extending below the bottom of the light housing do you notice any light bleed / glare when you're looking at them?
