Anyone have either? Going to get one for my girl, wondering if I will be using it for coral\fish shots as well.

Sensor wise, both are very similar so the quality of the pictures shouldn't be that different. The reasons why I would choose the 5300 over the 3300:
  • It has a swivel screen
  • It has GPS capabilities
  • It has built in WIFI
  • It has more auto focus points
As you see maybe (but only maybe) the last point is the only that has potential for better images but for macro shooting you shouldn't or maybe won't use autofocus anyways so there...

The secret for great tank pics is a great macro (Micro for Nikor) lens.
Happy reefing

I have the D3300 and its great for taking tank shots with, I am still learning so my shots are not the best but they are pretty good for a rookie. Also unless you and or your girl are really really into photography, I would save the $200-$300 more it would cost for the D5300 w/lens.
