I've been having an issue lately with my ReefKeeper Elite. It started two weeks ago when it just reset itself. i had to go in and reprogram the head unit and all the power bars. Worked fine for a week and then yesterday some of the channels in the power stopped working and needed to reprogrammed. The2 PB 4's needed reprogramming but the PC 4 did not. Is the head unit on it's way out. Up until this point(It's been running for two years) I've never had an issue. Also, none of the units got wet, I checked that first.

It may be the backup battery inside the head unit. How old is the unit? It could also be a buss issue. Check the number of buss errors on the head unit under system then info on the head unit.

Not sure, I bought it used. I've been running it for two years. If it is the battery, it's the big one inside, correct?

It is a button type battery. I will see if I can find a photo.

OK, I don't have a photo of the RKE head unit handy but I did find one of the Archon. The battery is in the metal holder near the top on the circuit board in the photo. The RKE has a similar arrangement.

Ok, thanks. You wouldn't happen to know what size would you; before I pull it all apart.

The Archon battery is a CR1216 3 volt. Photo below with battery removed. I used a toothpick with the tip broken off to push the battery out of the holder. There are two openings in the back corner of the battery holder.

Rob @ReefStrong can probably tell you if they are the same battery.

Danny is correct. The batteries are the same type. I would imagine that as the RKE's and alike have some years behind them now... that their batteries are seeing then end of their life span. I would replace them with the Lithium 1216 3 volt . It is also advisable as Danny suggests...to give every bus connection and cable end a complete and through inspection for sign of corrosion and continuity. These areas of corrosion are responsible for the majority of buss related issues. Generally a small #1 cross point screwdriver and a gentle nudge with a good tooth pic is all you need to replace them.

Thanks guys, got it out last night an it indeed was a cr1216. Should I also put some dielectric grease on the bus connections to help out with corrosion control? Just wondering.

I have thought about that, but have not tried using the grease. My modules are in seperate compartments of the stand from the sump. So far I have not had an issue with corrosion.

Any connector plugs that have signs of corrosion should be replaced/repaired. Any terminals sockets where corrosion has compromised the connection... should also be replaced. Applying dielectric grease to the terminal connections where corrosion to the terminals is present will have little to no benefit to the communication of the bus.

Do read this article before using dielectric grease.
Use of greases in connection protection seems to be a controversial topic.
