hi all, so i had 4 tank bred azure damsels that i got 2 Saturdays ago. Came home this evening and they are all dead and I'd like to try and figure out why.

when i got them they went straight into a 3ft qt dosed with CP which has been running for months. Due to potential biofilm issues i then moved them to a recently setup 2ft qt on monday and dosed again with cp. The tank began to look cloudy the last couple of days, i added prime every day in case of ammonia spikes and increased aeration. They had not been eating much of anything in the cp so i made the decision to remove it, added carbon last night and did a 50% water change.

Now last night I noticed that the pH was low, around 7.6 so i added an airstone over night which increased it to 8 by morning. The 50%wc then increased it to 8.1. when i left this morning they were more active and picking at bits of food, i added prime then went to work. came home and they were all dead, I'm gutted and really frustrated with myself as i must have done something wrong but don't know what.

I am thinking the following could have happened:

1) they starved - not likely as they all died at roughly the same time and do not look overly skinny although they hadn't been eating much in the CP hence the removal
2) i increased the ph too quickly - 7.6 to 8.1 in the course of 8 hours or so
3) decreased the cp too quickly
4) added too much prime maybe, maybe also have interacted with the CP? although i have used this batch of prime and cp together many times and not had an issue up to now
5) made too many environmental changes, change of tank then 24hours later reduced cp, added extra filter with carbon and did a water change and the fish died from stressa

i have ruled out ammonia what with the large wc, prime additons and placed an alert badge before i left this morning which stayed clear

think thats everything, any thoughts appreciated

Thanks

Nick

I did turn the airstone off before going to work so i guess the oxygen levels could have plummeted and possibly of the prime didn't have anything else to react with it could have reduced the oxygen even further. ph as of now is 8 so this hasn't dropped since this morning. frustratingly i do have access to an o2 probe but left it at work!

It was likely the airstone being taken offline with the bacterial bloom depleting O2 long enough to kill the fish.

i think that may be it, i would have thought a 50%wc would have diluted any bloom but i guess highly oxygenated water plus slightly elevated temps due to warm weather may have been a recipe for disaster throughout the day
