I have a Royal Gramma that likes to eat pellets that float on the surface. I like that I can turn off the return during feeding and then turn it on and have the uneaten pellets go down the overflow to the sock.

I wonder if cycling power on the return will significantly shorten its life? And if taking food from the surface is unhealthy for the fish?

Thanks!

Nope and nope. Pumps are designed to be cycled on and off routinely. Fish can be real pigs sometimes, so as they get used to being fed you'll even see them sticking their snouts out of the water in anticipation...

I always turn off my return pumps during feeding for 10 minutes.

If you don’t want to turn off your pump, use a floating feeding ring. I made some using 3/8” black tubing and 3/8”double barb inserts. Tie a cord to this and your ready to go.

Thanks for the responses and ideas. I appreciate it!
