hi guys,
just woke up and was checking my tank out b4 headed to the office. noticed some black looking algae (thin coated) on the polyps of my purple power palys (closed up). almost like a ring around the closed up zoa. just wondering if this could be detrimental to my zoas health. :ooh:

i'm running 2x tunze 6065s, 2x tunze 6045 zoas are halfway up in a high/med flow area.

I have had some dark brown/black looking "crud" grow on a lot of my PE's. I noticed this mainly after a nitrate spike back a few months ago. It almost looks like it got burnt. If this is the same stuff you are talking about, all i did to remove it was dip it in peroxide and lightly brush with a tooth brush the stuff and it came right off. Polyps have been thriving ever since.

I had black velvety algae growing around the base of my purple deaths. I picked off with tooth. Pick then moved to higher flow and not had any problem.

ok so basically i need to get them off. i'll use the toothbrush method. they're on the LR so maybe i need to brush them off with a hobby paitbrush. thanks guys!

I had something similar once on a colony of Ked's Reds. Kinda looked brownish. You may have a fungus of some sort. I used dips and a soft toothbrush. It took multiple treatments and I was about to give up, but then they got better and it went away. Just be careful, persistent, and isolate them from your other zoas so it doesn't spread. You'll win the day eventually.
