This doesn't look like it's even pointing to fish as a global warming/killing the reefs thing, but rather that the hobby as it is now just picks fish out of the ocean to kill them with no real purpose. We're trying to say we keep them fat and happy in our homes for a long time, but there's a reason that people on here who have had their fish the 15-20 years they're capable of living are celebrities on this forum.

How about advancements in understanding coral propagation, fish breeding, etc? The majority of damage to reefs have nothing to do with our hobby, yet our hobby(and the money behind it) is why we have made massive strides in propagation and breeding. So we are not behind the majority of the destruction, but we (a collective "we" referring to the industry) are a large part of the reason that reef restoration projects are becoming increasingly common... and increasingly successful.

I am not saying we should not minimize our impact, but I am certainly saying there are two sides to this story.

This is spot on. We are visual creatures. Nobody cares about things they don't see. You can read all the articles you want about any subject but you will not be really impacted if you can't connect visually.

You know there is a small percent (probably very small) of people who go to a public aquarium or over to someone's house and see a reef tank and get inspired. Whether that leads to them getting into coral propagation or fish breeding or just a reef clean up, good things do come from visual displays.

Can we be better? Absolutely. Do we need to be better? Maybe. Is this documentary another biased, misguided, one sided hit piece? Definitely.

Using certain words on public forums isn't helpful to conversations either, it's hurtful. You don't refer to people as retards when you try cases in the Supreme Court do you? If you want to say it out in the middle of nowhere next to your sooty woodstove, go ahead, just keep it private.

I have recently come to discover that the youth see your rough language as a clear sign that you are an "oppressor" because you use hard words. They have learned to ignore everything else you say after you speak roughly, ("Mr. Oppressor" ) and they cancel out your opinion because you are not "woke" like they are.

After all the comments here, both insightful and not so much, I'm actually quite interested to see the film. I don't doubt that 95% of the reef fish caught are dead within a year (I've always argued that it must be really high); what is less clear to me is the degree to which the aquarium hobby affects wild stocks. Seemed to me that the Hawai'i fishing ban was more knee jerk reaction than science-informed ..... but what do I know, I'm just an 'internet' expert.

So the demise of the ocean, reefs and life in the ocean could not be caused by the centuries/multiple decades of throwing trash and whatever anyone or any country doesn't want out into it.... GARBAGE ISLAND out in the middle of the pacific ocean the size of Texas has nothing to do with the major demise of the ocean?
There are multiple horrible people and governments that seriously pretend that they are all for saving oceans and ocean life, but then throw everything including the kitchen sinks into the ocean like a giant garbage can.

The ocean is not like it is now by mistake, its more due to the pure ignorance our forefathers and mothers had (ohhh and we still do it, even though we know its wrong)......why do you think NYC still has a gigantic garbage island.....they still wont stop, because they want everyone to think the ocean problems are climate.....but at the end of the day its human...WE ARE THE PROBLEM, not the aquarium business or hobby per say, but us as human beings, we are the most destructive living organisms on the planet.

Our planet goes through cycles, but if we force the hand of our planet (ie: climate change, due to pollution) we will lose the battle every time, all the time.

hope you all have an aquarium in your Bomb shelters.

I'll probably watch this. I'm a vegetarian for environmental reasons more than health reasons. All of our fish, inverts, and coral are captive-bred. I started with CaribSea Life Rock... I'm doing my part to protect the earth.

I am neutral on importing ban or actually OK with it. The trouble is all the captive bred fish stock are immediatley bought up so ban would be much more successful if phased out like most programs. Farms in Florida could easily replace demand it done gradually.

Real issues have little to do with this hobby but it is an easy quick win for politics. I have rescue Hawaii fish and aquaculture corals and dry rock. I do miss good live rock but little else.
