Hi all,
This is my first post on reef2reef, I have been away from the hobby for a while.
I noticed a post from earlier this year which discusses what I think is the same issue I have, but I'm not too sure.
This tank has been running for 2 years. Bombies are all articial rock and tank has only ever had artificial salt + RO.
Typical purple corraline has become well established, however in the past 2 months these dark red patches have exploded on the rock work.
I believe it is a form of coralline as it is hard, crusty and dislodges in flakes when you pick it off with your fingernail etc.

It is growing really quickly, so if it's not coralline I may have a big problem. Can anyone confirm please?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you.
I just picked at a few pieces and it comes off in flakes, deep red on top and crusty/gritty white below. Seems to be coralline to me to but ive never seen it this colour

Ryan at BRS had similar and it was hypothesized it's damaged coralline

Thanks. Do you remember what episode of BRSTV? By damaged coralline, are they suggesting it's dying/dead?

I think it was one of the lives on Ryan's home tank. 2-3 months ago?

I definitely don't know enough to speak on it but I gathered it is damaged and could die or repair itself. I have no idea how or what damages it though

In many cases with red film, it can be several things. As a test, in general. . . . . . .
If it blows off with direct flow or a turkey baster, its cyano
if it is easily removed with a toothbrush, it is turf or red film algae
if it does not rmove easily and appears encrusted, it is coraline

I found the episode. It's the one titled 'A year of hard lessons. Avoid them if you can'

I just picked at it with my thumbnail and it comes off in flakes, deep red on top and crusty/gritty white below. Turkey baster and tootbrush won't remove it.

I suppose it is corraline but I've never seen it red like this

Comes in various colour and shades of purple, red, green orange, and yellow.

That colour is real fine IMO. Lucky!
Your tank is full of coralline, so my guess, coralline.

In my first reef tank which was started in 2004 from actual live rock, I had many colors of coralline, from light pink to deep, dark burgundy. IIRC, pink-colored was highest (closest to lights) and burgundy was the lowest (furthest from lights). Red-colored was in there, too.

I find it strange that you can pick if off with your fingernail if it's coralline.

Personally, I wish my current, second reef tank has more red/burgundy coralline. It only has pinks and purples that I seeded from ARC Reef pink and purple fusion products.

IME coraline algea that is dying turns orange and is very flourescent under just blue light. I know coraline can be many colors so I'm sure it doesn't all change the same color when dieing either. With yours spreading I can't image it is damaged/dieing.

This look like it...?
Thank you! Yes, that looks like it.
It's growing directly under 2x Radion XR30 G4 pros but they are turned down quite a bit. Tank has 2x Mp40's and an M2 return pump which are also turned down quite a bit.
Seems to be a likely suspect.

Seems to be a good type of coralline algae. Should t be a problem unless it takes of other species of coralline algae that you like. I’m assuming
