While I agree with Madreef philosophically (the three points he mentioned are what should determine popularity), I doubt that's the reason. By that logic ( and again, I think he's using ACTUAL logic instead of obsessed-reefer logic lol), the purple monster shouldn't be popular at all. I think the reason it never became popular is because the right person never slapped their name on it.

Well you weigh all three points....and the purple monster gets high points in looks and rarity. Now you can argue that rarity has a relationship with growth and that would be a good argument......fast growing captive corals can be rare for a period of time but with-in a few years everyone will have one......doh!

I've been looking at pictures and I have yet to see one that had any polyps extension. Mine on the other hand ALWAYS has ployps everywhere , lights on, off, they are always out. Does that mean it's happier then every other one I've seen?

Maybe. Maybe stretching for light or food or any other reason we can't explain.

Yeah, I've still got mine and it's been thriving for a couple of years now. Have sold / traded a few frags of it. Mine does best in lower light these days and grows very quickly. If you want to trade some stuff, just let me know and we can work something out via pm.

Mine still looks as deep red as it did the day I got it. I'm with you, not sure why it's not more popular.

Used to have a colony on a 6x6 rock made the mistake of putting a purple porite at same rock which more aggressive.

It gets about 500 par 18in below my Radion pro. I feed my reef aminos and phytoplankton. It's been an easy grower.
My parameters
Cal. 450
Mag 1600
Alk 8 to 8.5
Phosphate .08 to .1
No3 trace or more.
I run a heavy sps tank.
Use vinegar or nopox every once in a while if needed. I like to keep my tank a little dirty than to clean
My 2 cents.

Here is a pic on Google (sorry I can't post pics, if someone could help that would be nice) of my colony a few years ago. This picture was taken before fragging and with flash in a separate container. It was the only thing that survived my tank problema last year. Lost all other sps. It's the deepest boldest red in any sps in my opinion.

This coral likes lower light and can be aclimate to higher light slowly. Lower nutrients make it pink. It grows fairly slow but steady enough to frag once it's a colony. I cut mine up to share it with my area knowing not many were out there. I agree that the first years a lot were lost thinking it was a high light low nurtient loving coral.

Yea each tanks different with daytime polyp extension. At night they really extend long.

Anyone have any updates? I am thinking about fragging or selling one of my small colonies.

Bumping an old thread with some heads in it. I gotta find my pictures of my old colony. Not as rare these days but still a bangin coral. Funny how this piece used to sell for 200 a frag back then once people started having trouble keeping it. The best red acro thread had me thinking about this piece. Mine was always straight red unless it got too much light which made it a little pink. Everyone said it looked like a strawberry.
Would love to see anyones pictures if they are still keeping this piece.
