Hi everyone! I am doing this Nano build with my husband, Dave. We are new to the saltwater hobby, but he had a 75g freshwater tank years ago, and brings valuable experience to the table for this build. We have a couple different plans for tank builds; first up is this Nano build for the living room, and the second project is 'His/Hers' 50g cubes build which we'll start around this year's end or early 2019.

Let's start this Nano build!

Nano Plans

We are going with the IM Nuvo 10, and Dave will build a tank stand for it. Also doing a QT setup, so the QT needs to be painted. (I heard that painting a QT black helps reduce stress in fish.) I read about the importance of keeping the DT and QT far apart from each other to reduce cross contamination, so the QT will be in a spare bedroom, while the DT is slated for the living room. Extra equipment will be purchased, so nothing will be shared between tanks.

Dave and I like different substrates, and lights, but we were able to agree on the style for the nano build. Maybe it's because we each get to have our own 50g down the road, that it's easy to compromise and style the Nano together! Here's what we've decided so far:

Tank Plans:

Heater: Cobalt 50w
Return Pump – Sicce 0.5 Dave noticed other Nuvo 10 owners saying the stock return pump was loud, so we're switching it out.
Marco Rocks
RO/DI system
– Dave will set it up in the basement
IM SpinStream Flow Nozzle
IM Custom Caddy Media Basket

Lights: Kessil A80 – This is really for me! Dave isn't as much into Kessils as I am, and he'll probably do something different for his 50g build. But he's ok with this choice for the nano, so yay!

Substrate: CaribSea Natural Reef live sand – This is more of Dave's liking. I like pink sand, but that's something I can look into for my 50g. PetCo had the Natural Reef sand in stock, so we were able to see it in person, and I like it more than I thought I would. So yay, again!

I made the first purchase for this project, (Nuvo 10), on Feb. 11th. Ordered from BRS, and they shipped out that Monday, Feb. 12th, with the tank arriving on Feb. 14th. The rubber foam mat was already attached to bottom of the tank when it arrived. Yay! One less thing to do. Really impressed with how well the shipping box was padded.

Yay on family builds! Most of our significants others (it seems) are brought into the hobby as observers (who usually become reluctant partners), so I'm always happy to hear about a couple that are in it together. Gives me hope. :-)

Looking forward to seeing this progress. Looks like you've made some great choices already!

Originally we did not plan on getting an ATO system so soon. With just a 10g tank, the plan was to manually top off as needed. However, my husband noticed MD was having a President's Day sale - 15% off one item, so we splurged. Plus, Dave wanted the reservoir here as he builds the stand, so he can get accurate measurements to make sure it'll fit in the cabinet. Speaking of which, he just mentioned this morning about posting a thread on the DIY forum to blog his stand build! I'll post a link in my signature once he starts that.

*Oops, forgot to order the Hydrofill Return Bracket. Really wish that was apart of this set.

Below is an Amazon order that came in. Cobalt/sicce for Nuvo 10, and other items are for QT.

Thanks for posting! Yeah, it's been really fun sharing in this excitement with my husband, and hopefully couple's build blogs will be a thing of the future.

Ended up not using the 2 pieces on the right:

Husband's design! (I tried, but I'm not very good at it. lol) Zip tied rocks together.

Clipped down zip ties. Cemented this side, let it dry overnight. Then cemented other side the next day.

Here's what it looks like in the tank! Plenty of space for a mag cleaner.

----- My husband has a 3 day weekend, so tomorrow starts the first day for constructing the tank stand. We'll also be leak testing the Nuvo 10, ATO reservoir, and the QT. More updates to come!

The weekend was pretty productive:

QT leak test:
As we stared at the QT, my husband realized that a regular mesh screen top won't work, because we plan on using HOB filter. So the plan is to get an egg crate that can be cut down to fit around the HOB.

My husband now has less time to work on the stand going forward, because his boss just reinstated overtime. Guess that's good and bad. Yay for extra money, boo for taking time away from our stand build! Dave estimates having the stand completely finished by the end of March, so that's not too bad.

We will continue with our leak tests today, and tomorrow for the Nuvo 10 and the ATO reservoir. I know reading about leak tests may not be fun, but doing them is actually getting us excited! We cannot wait to start cycling!!

Update: For anyone following, sorry for the lack of posting. We got a mild snow storm last weekend that prevented us from working on the stand. Too cold to be out in the garage all day!

Dave has started tinkering with the RO/DI, and plans to get that up and running this weekend. It's going in the laundry room, which is fine with me. I'm not great with keeping up on laundry anyway. So now I'll have an excuse, 'Sorry, can't do laundry. The RO/DI is running.' ;)

I'll be getting the QT setup and on standby for saltwater! It's already been painted, and egg crate light diffuser has been cut to fit. Now I need to get out the vinegar and disinfect everything going in the QT. Yeah, everything is brand new, but I just want to get off on the right foot!

Update/pics to come on Sat/Sun!

That rock scape is awesome

Getting pretty close here! My husband brought the stand inside real quick to see what it looks like with the tank on it, and to make sure the ATO fits in the cabinet. (It does!) Now it's back out to the garage for stain and poly coats. Oh, and a handle for the door.

RODI is setup, sans the DI resin cartridges, as shown in pics. The output is 20 psi, so Dave used a pressure gauge to compare and got a reading of 50 psi. Decided to get a booster pump and extra RO tubing. Coming via Amazon tomorrow!

(Note to hubby: If you need to explain in more detail about the pressure issue, go for it! Add to the build...don't be shy!)

Stand looks great! My ro/di runs at 100 psi no pump. Got lucky there

Yay! We are a go for making RO/DI water. My husband is going to PetCo tomorrow after work, to pick up some Instant Ocean salt. The plan is wait until Saturday morning, when we're both home all day, to run the RO/DI system. Then make saltwater Saturday night, let that aerate/heat for 12 to 24 hours, and then I can start cycling the QT by Sunday night! Cannot wait!

That's a lot junk in your water coming in at 267. It's always good to see it at 0 though. This my water change station in my basement. The container on the right is rodi and salt mix on the left. It's circulated and heated 24/7 just in case. The salt mix container is also sealed so no water evaporates out and the salinity stays consistent. Refill it about every 2 months or so even with doing a water change on a 75 gallon tank. The pump naturally falls with the water level. I can never keep it straight[emoji23]

Nice setup, Foxy-88! How do you keep the saltwater container sealed with a heater/power head cords sticking out? My husband was thinking about that yesterday, and he thought about cutting a small notch near the lid for the cords to hang out. Yeah, so yesterday my husband played hooky from work, and we made our first batch of RODI water. It took about 2.5 hours to make 9g. (Thought it'd take way longer than that!) During that time, the TDS input changed to 221. Output stayed at 0. DI resin canister looked like this after just making 9g, plus the few 'throw away' gallons from the previous day:

Yikes, it's already turning orange? Well, we do live in a new construction area, on city water. Our house was built 2 years ago, and three houses are being built right next to us as I write this. Not sure if that's the reason for the high TDS or not. I started watching BRS videos immediately on packing our own DI resin to save $$!

Guess we'll not worry too much until the TDS out reads 1 and/or the color change becomes more apparent. Hoping to get 100g before needing to replace DI resin.

I got a water saver on mine so it makes about 150 gallon per day. Fills my tank in about half a day. I sealed hole with ducting tape

Last night was Day 1 of cycling. We're doing Dr. Tim's Fishless Cycling, and will follow that 14 day chart. Dumped in recommended amount of First Defense for our tank size. Waited 30 mins. Then put in One & Only, and (40!) drops Ammonium Chloride, as per bottled instructions. Today is Day 2, so that means testing tonight!

Here's my QT setup. Ignore the mess....I'll get around to cleaning up sometime tomorrow. We had issues with the ViaAqua heater; it wasn't heating up properly and the 80 degree saltwater we put in QT last night dropped to 70 degrees this morning. (I double checked to make sure that neither of us accidentally bumped the knob. Nope. Should still be heating at 80.) Most of this morning was spent turning up the dial to get the water to heat up. The red light indicator switched on/off for the next few hours. But when I checked the heat around noon, it was 68 degrees. So I tossed it aside, and broke out the Cobalt, which was intended for the Nuvo. Cobalt is working nicely! We'll just grab another Cobalt for the Nuvo.

No tank stand updates this weekend. Too cold to do anything out in the garage. Warmer weather can't come soon enough!
