I started my Reefer 170 with a pair of juvenile DaVinci's 18 months ago. I lost the smaller clown ~1 year ago to what might have been Brook or Ick. I lost four other fish close to the same time, only the larger DaVinci and a Midas Blenny survived. I put a UV on the system and then waited 5 months before adding anything else. I added a small clown 3 months ago, and a goby and dartfish a few weeks after the small clown. All has been well since last addition 2+ months ago.

This evening I noticed that my large DaVinci has a single bubble eye, slightly cloudy, other eye is fine. No other odd behavior or other external issues that I can see. She's eating well. I read that this could be an injury, the goby has had some minor territorial skirmishes.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks

Popeye can be caused by a few different things. An injury can often cause popeye. Sometimes rubbing in the shipping bags can abrade the fish's eye (s). The other can be a bacterial infection which can be a worsening of the prior situation.
First you can try treating with Epsom salts. Use plain unscented USP Epsom salts. Can be used in the DT. Will slightly elevate the magnesium level which usually is ok; the other is a slight elevation in the sulfate levels. Unknown how much but this is a very old school approach that has been used for years without harm.
Dose 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons of tank water. Can redose one time.

If this doesn't provide relief, Erythromycin (aka Maracyn) works on many forms of popeye.

The fish probably got spooked and scratched it’s eye on a rock, causing pop eye. You can treat in a hospital tank or I prefer to just leave it in the main display. Then feed as normal and keep water quality high. The eye normally goes back to normal size within two weeks. Same goes for cloudy eyes.
