started my cycle last Monday. Added couple pounds of cured LR. I added dr tims one and only on Monday..

Ammonia 3ppm
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Ph8.2
Salinity 1.025
Temp- 80

What else can I do to jump start the cycle ?

Cured lr doesn’t need bacterial help

Post pics of it

Even the posted ammonia reading is possibly wrong you’d have to handle it very poorly to make it produce 3 ppm in excess of what it can already oxidize being cured

Api test

We cycle live rock completely opposite of how we cycle dry rock

When people move over live rock to aquarium conventions they instantly set up coral tanks with no cycle, using cured items.

Need pics

This link below covers why you don’t need to measure nitrite and nitrate

Will get pics later on, I've added some ammonia after adding dr tims one and only to get the 3 ppm ammonia

Yep that’s ok but don’t add more ammonia

That’s only for group A rocks per the thread above. It hurts the animals on cured rock

With group b rock, you just go

It’s skip cycle rock. If the test is api, don’t factor it, go off visual benthics as we show.

That is really all you can do. After that, patience takes over.

How many days was it between adding ammonia and these test results?

Added ammonia after dr tims, I believe it was last Friday. Ammonia has been the same since

You are about to have a seemingly crazy cycle that only seems that way but in fact works like the cycles we collected above

If you had cured lr, it doesn’t go that long not being able to digest 3 ppm

Between unknowns and api unknowns, pics w solve the issue. If the rock was not cured, that makes sense.

Did you use the Dr Tims ammonia chloride?

A system with cured live rock should start breaking down ammonia into nitrite/nitrate almost immediately.

Do you use RODI?

Yes rodi, yes dr tims ammonia.. I was looking foward to seeing nitrites after a week or so. 2 weeks is coming up fast

How was the cured LR kept at your LFS before you purchased it?

5 star I used dr time and then added stability. You will see some nitrites at about day 16 or so. Do not do water change it will just slow down the cycle. My cycle took 41 days to complete but I did not start with live rock. I added live rock like day 36 or so, now it's cycles and I have clowns in it. I also added marine pure block for seeding for my dt. I am not medicating as clowns are eating well and not showing any illness.

It was kept in a small maybe 20 gal tank with fish in it. Rock is dark in color

Cured rock doesn’t produce nitrites at all, you are going about the cycle backwards. It took quite an in depth work to show how live rock cycles opposite of dry rock. To me that’s the most critical cycling detail never put into cycling threads

As you get advice meant for dry rock cycling, expect it to be tough to get yours done.

As your cycle continues and seems to do crazy things, remember that all cycles follow the same timeline given a few simple controls/in your case cured vs uncured. It’s not really misbehaving

Many times we get reports of cured rock and it’s just grey live rock uncured. That would make sense and pics w help.

But testing with api sure can cause problems.

Even before pics, you may have this rock in an ultra low surface area setup, which is why we wouldn’t have used 3 ppm to test it. We would have never ever dosed ammonia at all. That a few pounds of lr cannot digest a mass of ammonia sitting in a bare bottom tank (if applicable) means nothing about their inherent bacteria. Overwhelming some bac doesn’t mean they aren’t there

This rock wasn’t for fishless cycling w dr tims. If you want to anyway, you need to factor in the complete tanks surface area before choosing a ppm stopping point, and, don’t use api to get there

Your ammonia could be as high as 3-6 there’s no telling from the common kits people use.

Did it have signs of algae growing on it, or other life? Was the tank stand alone or part of a main filtration system?

Main filtration..
Only picture I have of the rock is this,

Should I wait it out with the ammonia I added or go and buy some more LR

That rock looks good.

At this point I would wait it out.

I should have asked earlier, how large of a system is this?

Small 20 gal tank
You've got me a little stumped. On a 20g system with what appears to be healthy LR I would never expect to see nitrites (unless caused by a false positive test) and would expect to see nitrates in the first few days.

I'm on the same boat as you lol . It's a solid piece of live rock. I'm thinking of getting a bit more LR and holding off on the ammonia dosing
