De-rimmed 40br? I think yes!

Looked all over the interwebs to see if you can de-rim a 40 breeder and all I found was "it's there for a reason it will bow out and bust" me being stubborn as I am (thank my Irish genes for that) I had to find out for myself and this is my results..

That corner overflow looking box has a rio 1700 and chemi pure so no sump. DIY 28 led light mix of rb cw 10k, soon to add blue cyan and true violet.

Looks good. Can't imagine the plastic rim holding much pressure or keeping it from bowing. Good luck.

If it works for a 40, it should work for a 10 gallon ......? I have a tank at school for the kids now, planning on get a thread going, the kids donated all the money to far, figured making it rimless would look pretty cool

Lizardfish, how exactly did you get the rim off? I have a 40 tall that has a broken pane I'd like to replace, but after working for several days I can't seem to get the top rim off.

No no bowing at all
Yes you can de-rim a 10 but its thiner glass so it wouldn't be hard to brake if kids are grabbing the rim and leaning on it.
It took some elbow greese, the trick is cutting it into 6-12" sections with a hack saw and then getting your fingers under the outside edge

I had never thought of cutting it into sections....help take the stress off, good idea. I also forgot, dumb kids = cut fingers, looks like ill be keeping the rim on afterall. Let us know if that things bows/breaks or stays solid. Im pretty curious, awesome man!

I was just curious about it bowing,the plastic trim is kinda sturdy.It looks like it will be a good build.I have tried to remove the trim on a 10 gallon,and both times I broke the glass.

Snakemanvet me too I broke a 5g 10g and a 8g Biocube b4 I figured out you can only bend it one way or it will brake on smaller tanks. But on the 40 no bowing yet

I appreciate your input guys/gurls so any ideas of what would be cool to do on this build?

to remove the trim on a tank use a blow dryer warm it up and start in the middle of the longest piece it flexes more so wont crack

I just took apart a 75g,40g and 2-55g tanks to save the trim (tanks had cracks)

well it look better than petsmart "trim-less" tank that for sure lol. there lot of silicone that need to be clean up after taking the trim off?

Omg I know right! I saw that an laughed, they just take 20g off the line b4 adding a rim by the looks of it haha. Yes but 30 min with 5 new razors and your good

Your going to be plagued with paranoia......there is a reason for the trim...the glass is also thinner then your actual rimless tanks...but hey someone's gotta be the guinea pig

Love the idea, always have. Fingers are crossed for you. Hope if ever something does go wrong your electrical is planned out for blowout. Only seen it done once and buddy came home to a 55 with a side panel broken on the floor He lost over $2500USD in corals and fish alone plus the 100 or so pounds of live rock and sand. The restoration work on his living room and finished basement was another grand as well. A week later he bought a rimless cube and swears he will never do a rim mod again
