No it'll turn to mush when its dead...looks like its trying to eat some sort of substrate perhaps.

Slow and steady wins the race!
They will release some nasty stuff if they die, had a huge carpet in a well stocked very healthy system years ago and over night it died and wiped out my tank.. Looked like some one had poured gallons of milk in the tank
