Dead Crab or a Molt?

Is this a dead crab or just a Molt?
I see these in my frag tank once or twice a month.
It looks pretty 'fleshy' for a molt, what do you think?

If shell is clear/empty- Molt . . . . . . . . . .. Meaty like a crab leg - dead specimen.

It's a dead one. Molts are kind of like fingernails. Just like the others said no meat at all.

Arghh, not good - the only issue in this frag tank is Nitrates are stuck at 20ppm.
What are other common cause of death in hermits?
Not enough food?

I had issues keeping hermits in my tank until i got lots of shells that were slightly larger, then the hermits stopped fighting for bigger shells. Now i have one that rocks a 1" trochus shell
