Hi Reefers!
I'm thinking about picking up some previously used live rock(now dead) for a tank I'm in the process of setting up. I've heard that there are several ways to prep it for going into a new tank.

Can some of you let me know how you could clean/prep this rock for my new tank? I'm definitely going to scrub it down, hose it off, and boil it. Is that all there is? Or should I be doing more.

Thanks!

I highly suggest NOT boiling it. There is a possibility tthat the rock will explode. Same with baking. What i did when i did the same thing is i did bleach baths, muriatic acid bath, which isnt required, and then multiple rodi water baths. Then i started cycling it in saltwater with a heater, and a pump.

Ok. Thanks!

So no boiling, just rinsing and soaking.

I've heard about the bleach baths, but I heard it destroys everything on the rock(good and bad) so I'm not sure if I'll do that, but thanks for the recommendation.

It does but does keeping the good outweigh the bad on the rock? Best to completely kill the rock, amd start from scratch. Bleach will also help get the rock white

Yea. That makes sense.

I'll do the bleach bath for the rock.
Its exactly what i did when my tabk crashed. I did 3 baths of bleach, 2 muriatic acid bath, and 3 fresh rodi water baths and my new tank has been set up for 4 months and its growing corraline already in spots. I had to seed of course. I did have a gha outbreak due to high phosphates, but cleared up nicely once i added my media reactor. I do feed a lot as well

Did you use pure bleach? Or was it diluted?

And is any household bleach safe?

Thank

No, dilute it. Household os fine. Id fill up a aprox a 20 gallon rubbermaid tote with water and added a gallon of bleach. But do not use the scented kind. Just regular bleacj
