Will someone please give me some advice. Is this toadstool dead or slowly dying. First placed him in the tank he was opening up for a couple of days. After getting knocked off my a crab or snail he has yet to open back up. Water prameters are good. 8.p pH 0 am 0 rites 0 rates. Calc is 420-440. Don't know what to do. Try secluding him on frag rack. Low light. High light. No flow. High flow. Don't know what to do.

Forgot to add. He will just be army extend his polyps. He almost looked like chicken skin. He gets bumpy but does not extend all the way out like he use to.

Yanno what ive never kept a leather before that i could call mine but they do this alot, because of its leathery texture they shed algae from them around 1nce every month and a half if it has to, just give it good enuff flow so when i does it can flush it off

normal. ive had leathers close up for a week while they shed. just takes time. make sure you give it a bit more flow than usual. this helps them to shed.

I would stop moving it around.... pick a location and leave it there for awhile... let it get used to something before making anymore changes

agreed. relax. soft corals and leathers are very durable corals and can acclimate to a vast range of environments. but itll never adjust unless you give it stability.

it's going to do this from time to time. get used to it. nothing to worry about. it's their way of shedding algae. as others have said, leave it alone. moving it will only pi$$ it off more.

I recently purchased 2 small toadstool leathers and had the same thing happen with one of them. I put them both in the same tank at the same time, one started shedding its waxy coat and opening the very next day, the other did nothing. The only difference between the 2 was the one that started opening was placed in a area of pretty high pulsing flow from my Gyre, and the other was in a moderate steady flow. After a couple of days, I decided to move the one that wasn't opening to a spot that would get some of the flow from my Gyre. Sure enough it started shedding its wax coat and opening the very next day. My conclusion it that toadstool leathers are most particular with regard to water movement, they like moderately strong, pulsing (not steady) flow the best. The only way I can describe the strength of the flow in my case is that it was strong enough to rock a golf ball sized rubble frag stone back and forth where it was wedged in my live rock. Hope this helps.

I have a very large toadstool. We have had it since January in a 29 gal while we created a 90 gal with LED lighting, sump, etc. He was doing great in the 29. Made sure all the 90 gal parameters were equal to the 29 before moving everything in. I don't believe the toadstool has survived. On 5/14/16, it stopped opening up. On 5/19/16 I noticed white spots on his top but he was still standing tall. Last night, 5/24/16, I reached in to feel him and he felt hard and dry, not slippery at all, and it appears the head is shrinking. We adjusted the LED's up a little last night, even though everything else is doing great! When/how do you determine it's gone and remove it from the tank?
Below pic is from 5/19/16..

Can he be saved? HELP!!! I loved this guy!

He doesn't look to bad. If you want you can bring him to me and swap out that small rock with the GSP on it. I'll heal him up and when your tank matures just a little more I'll bring him back to you.

Tank has been up since 3/27/16. Everything else is doing ok. We had the LED lights at like 40% of power as it just looked a lot brighter than what the 29 was at. When we tested with the Seneye it showed the PAR levels were really low, which is why we brought it up to 60% last night. Plan to leave it there today and then maybe bring it up to 70% and leave it there for a few days. Could it be that he just wasn't getting enough light? How would you "heal" him?

Well sound2 , I was actually addressing shmoore, but your toad stool doesn't look that bad to me either, the best I can say is leave it be for a while. I have had my toadstool close and not open for several days. The lights I think were fine don't mess with unless you want to for aesthetics. I have had it for about 3 years and was very small when I purchased it. Its been through all kinds of light changes, from t5s to LEDs , I don't think its the lights and more the water parameters. When they die they droop over and begin to rot. Check and make sure something is not making a meal of it.

Thank you. I'm going to do another chemical water test tonight. Everything was fine as of 5/20/16. Salinity was a little low, but I'm slowing bringing that up with partial water changes every other day.

Sounds good, just remember these things can act fickle for no apparent reason, they are very hardy though, just give it some time.

toadstools are weird like that. I Kinda had the same issues when I first put mine in. I had mine at 35 par for a long time and it did great. Keep in mind when you're using that seneye its going to read the blue spectrum of the LED probably 20% low also. With that error factor if you are around 50 par lighting probably isn't an issue. In fact if you start cranking light to it it's going to amplify whatever stress it already has going on, if there is any.

That toadstool are very hardy. It doesn't look like its dying. They can adapt to any light level and water flow. They do need some flow to push dirt and detritus off of them.

When they get really stressed out like when I cut them to pieces to frag them. They will shrink and be wrinkled up on the base. The pic you have doesn't show this so just give it some time and it will open up again.
