Shrimp, crabs need iodine in their body for molting and forming new exoskeletons. If their iodine level is too low, that can cause a "bad molt" and they die.
Doing regular WCs usually provides all the iodide (ion state of iodine) that your animals need. However, if you are lax on WCs then you might want to consider dosing iodide. However, I would only do this using a test kit. Too much iodine is toxic. You never want to exceed 0.08ppm (max concentration found in natural seawater.)
