Death in Fish

Should you euthanise a fish where it seems there is little to no hope of saving it?

I wanted to get a rough gauge of how people deal with fish who are very very sick. Not just velvet, brook etc. but lying on the substrate, breathing heavily, clouded eyes etc. I had a sick blue tang with those same symptoms and everywhere I looked, I was told to euthanise and there were very very few articles which were positive in their mode of thinking. I did everything I could and spent so much getting every form of medication, food etc. I could and hope was pretty much gone. He was looking to be on his last leg and didn’t look like he’d last even another hour. I was watching him for ages at that point. To my absolute amazement, he got up and started swimming. The next day his breathing became normal and after another few days he was completely back to normal. I feel now, my thoughts are “what if I had done it”. I know this is definitely on the darker side of fish keeping but I wanted to see what people thought of an end of life situation.

I think aquarists in general are too quick to euthanize. Especially in freshwater where people will depopulate an entire tank because of Camallanus, which is 100% treatable.

People can be straight up horrific in the freshwater hobby. Many fish stores I’ve been to say that some people just flush their fish when they see any sign of sickness or lethargy and that’s it’s more common than we think.
