I've recently inherited an 80 gallon rimless and it was severely underpowered in terms of in display water movement it already had a icecap gyre 1K and some other crappy power heads. Should I get another 1k or should I get a 3k and sell the 1k? Any thoughts or opinions welcomed.

I’d dump the icecap. They get too loud as they age. If it were me I’d get two maxspect 330’s or 350’s and go won’t have to worry about flow anymore. I have 2 350’s on my 210g nearly silent after a few day break in period

You can dial down an oversized pump, but you can't get more out an undersized one.

I just got 2 XF330s for my 48x24x24 and dialed them in today. The controller took a while to learn and I had to resort to YouTube to figure it out. That's said, in antisync mode, they do exactly what I want them to. I'm running pulse mode with the longest ramp up and down times from 20% to 100% over the 8 hour maximum period. Moves a lot of water. My only concern is a lack of battery backup. As someone mentioned above, IceCap may have issues which I can't speak for. But my only concern at this point is having some form of backup. I can't imagine needing much more beyond that from the pumps or controller.

You can use the IceCap battery backup for your Gyre pumps: https://www.coralvue.com/icecap-battery-backup
