I’ve had my 45g rimless JBJ AIO up and running for about 2 years now after upgrading. Things have been going well for the most part until the last month or so, and I’m debating about tearing it down and starting over.

Back story - I had a random aptasia here and there in my original tank that I would always take care of and it was never a big deal. After moving everything over to the AIO, I started noticing aptasia popping up in the overflow and I would take care of them as best I could. Fast forward to about a year ago, and my overflow is COVERED. There wasn’t much that could be done without draining the tank completely. I figured as long as they were in the overflow and not the display, I’d just have to live with it.

Another 6 months go by, and now I’m seeing them in the display. I tried lemon juice, kalk paste, etc which didn’t even slow it down so I moved on to peppermint shrimp, then berghia nudibranchs (after the shrimp died), and even a filefish. Nothing has helped.

After 2 years of blood, sweat, and tears with my tank, I’m about ready to throw in the towel. I love my fish, I love my coral, but I HATE my tank. I’m almost too embarrassed to show these photos, but I can’t think of any other way to show everyone what I’m dealing with.

So where do I go from here and how do I do it while doing my best to save my fish and coral? Do I move everything to a very simple 30g spare tank (no sump or overflow) I’ve got and then try to bleach the 45g and bring it back up before the spare tank crashes? Do I leave it until I can afford to upgrade to a larger tank, but then still have to wait until that’s cycled?

I don’t see a way to handle this that without picking up a bunch of dry rock, curing it, cycling a tank, fragging and quarantining ALL of my coral. I’m ok with fragging and QTing, but I’m scared of losing my coral and/or fish. I’m lost and so depressed as reefing is my one outlet for my stress. I know it’s my own fault for not QTing my rock/coral in the very first tank I had, but it still just plain sucks.

I’m stuck in the forest here and can’t see my way out...help?

If I were you... I would get some marine pure blocks or spheres and run the 30 gallon until it’s fully cycled. You have time. The aiptasia isn’t going to crash your tank. Once the 30 cycles, add your fish, corals, and inverts. Drain your AIO and kill the rock and sanitize the tank and start over. I typically wouldn’t recommend that but your infestation is pretty substantial and the typical treatments aren’t going to work.

How many berghia's did you try? They are very effective but take time, a long time lol. Also do you happen to have any fish that would eat them? If it were me and you were happy with how the tank was before I would invest heavily in more berghias, like 30 of them at least. Put half in the overflow and the other half in the display.

If this isn't feasible a tear down is in order.

Among the various reef pestilence you can get, aiptasia are far from the worst. I have them in my reef now- kept at bay by my filefish and copperband, but still inhabiting various crevices. I'm actually not doing anything about it. But is I wanted to, I would get a few peppermint shrimp. Berghia work too; I have used them twice over the years- once worked and once didn't. I think they suffer a lot of predation. Peppermints seem to be the most fool-proof solution. Try a few.

I had 12 of them along with a few egg spirals. I didn't put any in the overflow because I couldn't figure out how to put them in without directly putting them on/near the aiptasia and I was afraid of them getting eaten instead of the other way around.

I had 4 peppermints bought from 2 different suppliers in an attempt to better my odds of getting some that would it eat. They didn't care for the aiptasia but they sure loved tearing into my torch corals!

What are the current parameters of the water in your tank? We do this for a living and have seen and beaten far worse infestations. Just takes time and persistence. You can beat this. :)

I'm not a fan of peppermint shrimp for aiptasia because as @wattson said, they will eat the nudibranches. Also as you said peppermints can irritate some corals.
Other fish & a few invertebrates will eat nudis. So wrasse, filefish, butterflies and dottybacks that we often keep can eat the nudis.
Also chemical treatments (used to zap aiptasia) can kill nudis.
That being said, I have seen a LFS tank that was infested with aiptasia. They used nudibranches & it was amazing how effective they were.
The challenge is to have conditions for the nudis to live & reproduce. Possibly some inhabitants in your tank ate your nudibranches. Given the right conditions, it takes 2 to 4 months for berghia to work.
I wish you good luck. I can see you have some lovely corals. Please keep us updated.

How satisfying it would be to blast aiptasia, majano, flatworms, etc. with a laser gun?! :D That could be a whole new dept. of my business! Thinking kind of like a Ghostbusters style uniform and theme song for when the van rolls up? Perhaps trained Aiptasia Eating Filefish with sunglasses and side mounted laser guns and AiptasiaX grenades? HAHA!

Sorry, give me a break. Worked a 12 hour shift at my shop and then had to plow all night. Not much sleep and a little loopy right now, LOL!

I had them pretty bad, 1 peppermint shrimp cleared them up over time. I personally would add in peppermint shrimp although you said you already tried that.

You could invest in a laser pen! lol but seriously they're out there.

I have a majano wand! It works great in a tank that only has a couple here and there but there is no way I could do that many in this tank. There are probably 500 :(
