Tank specs, 240g (72x30x25), 36” tall stand, pvc hard plumbing from a EMS 32” (1.5” drains) to a 60” Bashsea SS60.

Return pump; Varios 8.

I technically could fit two (2); without the intake screen and inlet about 1/2” from baffle wall.

Or I could do 1 and split the pvc return line.

Yes, 2 pumps provide redundancy, but if they are both set at 1 or 2 power level, it almost feels like a waste (vs 1 pump running at a 3 or 4). I’m just guessing flow at this point.

I guess I’m just curious on others thoughts?

Thank you!

Yes it’s redundancy vs “waste”. Waste I imagine in terms of money. In reefing we are always paying for redundancy, which equals safety/reliability.

Looks like you already own both pumps. Why not? No big deal to run the pumps at lower setting. Less wear and tear. Less plumbing resistance as you’re not splitting the return. Yes, the return section is more crowded with two.

I just read it more carefully and you’re saying you gotta get rid of the screen? The bashea has that foam baffle beforehand so that should keep all the snails and crud out of the return section. But 1/2” from the side is cutting it close. Maybe test run it with water and make sure you’re happy with the return compartment water height and that there are no vortexes or vibration issues etc. just plumb with flex tubing and have it go to the overflow compartment. Sorry don’t have a better idea. Sucks that in a 60” sump the return section is so small.
