I am taking the plunge and joining the salt water world. I found a used red sea max 250 locally and thought i made up my mind to get it. As I read more about them and talk to shops I am not sure. I have read about issues with them running hot and one place told me they didn't think there was enough filtration. I don't want unnecessary work caused by my equipment. I am trying to get started on a reasonable budget. Other tanks I have looked at are a 56g and a 75g. Both would have a filter hanging off the back which I know isn't ideal but, can save a bunch by not having to buy a sump and reef ready tank. 75 is the biggest I want to go right now. One question I have is. Is it always better to go bigger? Either will work in my space and budget. I may be paranoid but getting the used red sea makes me nervous because I'm afraid to be buying someone else's problems. Plus if I have to add power heads for more flow, upgrade skimmer like most people do them I am not really ahead. I am going to be working at learning the ropes and don't want to have to fight it. I know I am kind of all over the place but, trying to cram lots of decisions in one. I plan on doing coral and fish by the way. I am tempted to go with the smaller one and see how that goes and then going bigger later. The move thong about the 56 is it's almost square and not a big foot print so it could easily go into a bedroom when I go bigger. My wisdom about the small one is will I out grow it real fast and is it more to take care of than the 75g?

I started small with a 46 gallon then went to a 75 gallon then to a 120 gallon. Yes I could have saved money if I went bigger first, but I feel like I learned a lot along the way by starting small. Plus I did not know how much I was going to like this hobby in the beginning.
(You are probably going to love this hobby!)

I've got a 75g now (downsized from a 175 when I moved) and think it's a perfect size for someone's first tank.

That's kind of where I am at. I have a tendency to go overboard when I get into something then if I lose interest I have a bunch invested. For example the mountain bike hanging in my garage. I really like the idea of the red sea max all in one. I just don't want a bunch of headaches. On the other hand I can get in it a lot cheaper that way. $500 for a ready to go system. About half the price of going new.

Well, I think Pets mart made my decision for me. They will have all ensemble sets 50% off on black friday. That makes a 75g $250. That should allow me to get a better light and can probably have a real nice set up for less than $800 which will make my chief financial officer happy.
