Howdy! Looking to upgrade to a IM 100ext but also looking to go with mangroves in the display. My idea is to place some shelf rocks on the bottom left corner of the tank and then build a sorta of rock retaining wall on the side to hold a deep sand bed to put mangroves in. I guess my question is would having say a 6in sand bed on top of a couple inches of rock cause and weird issues down the line? I know people say deep sand beds can cause problems so wondering if a good amount of rock being buried under sand would also be a bad idea. Here is my pretty great blueprint done in paint!

It will not cause any weird issues. You are good to go! Get it on!!

I did a really similar thing for my last tank actually, I used ceramic bricks as a filler as it was much cheaper than macro rocks. Didnt have any issue at all.

I’ve had no issues burying dry Caribsea rock in a 5-inch sand bed as a foundation to support my live rock.
Make sure all rock structures are in contact with the bottom of the tank. PVC can also be used as a hidden foundation.

I have thought of something like this as I would love to keep semi terrestrial sealife like mudskippers and crabs (especially fiddlers and sand bubblers) although I havent seen much reefers being able to keep sand bubbler crabs.

Oh yeah that would be very cool! Don't think I'll be going that route with this tank but maybe some day!

Hmm no major plans yet. Ideally I want that "hill" side to have mangroves at the top and some macro algae as well. Would probably go with a very Caribbean themed side with the mangroves. Some gorgonians and rock flowers spread about.

I did just see the Innovative Marine INT 100 Peninsula is on a big sale so really considering pulling the trigger on that instead. Trying to decide how I could make my plan work in that tank though. Hard to tell if I could fit power heads on the back sides of the overflow though. Can't find any good builds with that tank.

Ohh good idea! Sounds like my plan is a go, thanks everyone!
I forgot to mention there are two types of bricks definitely dont get the cement one, make sure its ceramic else your pH will spike like crazy.

Thanks! And I did actually go with the peninsula but I'll figure out a place to put together the idea!

Dang I really wish I took a picture, but I had mine in a peninsular too! I put my mangrove on the side of the overflow, how I did it was an acrylic box to hold in the sand then glue small macro rocks on it to hide the acrylic, the gaps between Marco were too big to hold sand in. Wish u luck, excited to see how it turns out.

Haha oh nice! Yeah I definitely plan on using acrylic to keep the sand in place, have a couple poorly sketched up ideas of how I might place it lol
