Defining the term "Mother Colony"

There is nothing colony about 2-5 eyes....

There is nothing "mother" about a coral that was taken from a even larger coral somewhere else.

..."but this is MY colony in which I take frags from" Oh... so you have a seed frag? I still see 4 eyes.. nothing colony about that..

"Mother colony is 2x2".... Mother? ... Colony? Sounds like one a one eye'd frag you've been growing for a few months.... you're fragging it already? You must be broke...

"I'm just trying to recover the costs of the frag" ..So... you're in the hobby to not spend money, and to cut up tiny pieces of coral? Hmmm... interesting... you should have hit the 10 dollar bin.

"People should mind their own business" ... um... you make it my business when you throw it in my face with every coral for sale.... We are all here because we love reef tanks...

"Price is for one eye"... Why not for 1 inch? Ohhh.. that's right, you have a two eye frag on 3/16" of flesh...

"Don't complain, it was a freebie" So in an attempt to give away stuff, you cut foreskin shrapnel chalice frags that are just gonna die? Great for the coral.. Im sure it loves it, I actually cut one of my digits off at the 1st of every month in hopes to become 6' 4" with 4 arms on some Goro ish one day.

Truth is... you will never even see most "Mother colonies" because most vendors/sellers are TOO smart to show them... Why? This brings us back into the whole coral pricing/supply and demand thing... If you don't know what supply and demand is, then you probably complain about coral pricing... Keeping in mind that some people are just trying to sell polished turds, it boils down to supply and demand.

For example... "Brand new LE erog234h98yt28uy chalice" or whatever.... You will probably not see the entire colony, you will probably see a frag for sale... something with a rim, healed all that... Of course they are going to put it on the table like they just found it under a rock. Why? If you only see one or two pieces... you may be more inclined to buy it out of the desire to have 1 of 1.... or so you think. Company releases more chalices etc..etc... now bam, 3-4 frags of the "Brand new weoiufh3eiulfhuierh chalice" pop up.... While your head is stuck in the new releases, older releases seem to pop up with healed frags ready to go.... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... I knew there was a REAL mother colony out there...

Indo is not shipping these vendors cut frags on gooch discs....

This is total truth.

However,I agree with every thing else, but when I said a 2x2 inch piece,I mean my chalices,I dont grow them large so I can fit more, but my SPS pieces are 6+ inches all the way!

I think that there are alot of corals out there that we have like BPE Flame Thrower that we will never see a piece much bigger than 2 inches or so,its so slow growing and not able to be produced very fast.

I think that if people show the monther colony, they will be putting them self out of the bussiness for sure! This is why we only see 1-2 colony shots after the corals is sold and out of demand......

A mother colony is a coral that has or is able to produce frags from it. The "original colony". I don't think size should be an issue when talking about a "mother colony"

Think of a space ship...a "Mother ship"...if 100 tiny little space pods come from the "Mother ship" it's no different than a single space pod coming from a different "Mother ship"....

Yes, I looped aliens into the discussion.

There can be only one mothership... you pretty much just said that anyone calling their frags mother colonies, liars! hahah

Umm, 4 eyes IS a colony-as in a colonial animals. Mother is used to define the origin of the frag piece. As such, if you have a specimen with 2 eyes, and chop it in half, the original 2 eyed piece WAS your mother colony. You can say "oh no no, it's a seed frag cause I say so" and your argument is just as valid as the guy saying "it's name is betsy."

As far as claiming that people simply putting frags up for sale is shoving them in your face...well, I can't help you there, momma taught me if I don't like something not to pay it too much mind, not to feel it's shoved in my face (this method has worked well with pumpkin pie, otherwise my face would be covered in much more pumpkin pie.)

Considering I often purchase corals with the intention of selling off to get my money back, i.e. spend no money- I'll politely disagree with you. That I intend to break even on coral purchases makes no difference which ones I look at (price wise), and frankly I fail to see how you can justify that position. If I can pick up an Acan X with 2 heads, grow it to 4 heads, frag it, then sell 2 of the heads and break even on my purchase, why is that somehow evil? The Acan won't suffer from it and will grow just fine (considering I just grew it from 2 heads in the first place,) so really, where's the harm? If it's just again, offensive to your sensibilities, well, I understand and I'll keep doing it until there's some actual justification for a change in policy.

The really nice stuff isn't cheap-hence it being nice (supply and demand.) I see no problem using my ability to grow a coral as a means to allow me to purchase the stuff I find desireable, be it highly priced or otherwise. That someone else also gets to benefit (considering that frags from a private seller don't sell at retail prices) is a boon for the hobbyist overall, so again, I don't find the failing in this.

Reread it bro. I'm calling a mothership a mothership no matter what comes out of it.

Lets not get to aggresive about this topic,it may be arguminitive, but lets keep arguing at a friendly level.

I hope that my comment wasn't seen as aggressive. That's the bad part about the net, can't really tell. So let me state, for the record, I wasn't being aggressive :) just showing/asking for a re-read.

His been in this hobby for 8 years. Gatta ask him next time.
I almost fell off my chair when I saw this, what should I call it....big frag.

Most of the sps in my tank started out as "frags". Most of them are the size of a softball or bigger now. I do not consider any of these as "mother colonies" because I have never "fragged" them. Even if I were too, wich I should because they are getting too big for space, I still wouldn't call them "mother colonies" because I don't expect my corals to grow so I can frag them. I expect my corals to grow so I know I am caring for my system correctly. Being able to share by giving, selling or trading is added fun to having a reef system.
