Dehumidifiers

Although Tina is capable of handling this herself, let me know if you want me to shoot over there and check it out.

I am definitely worried about the mold too. It was behind the shade in our spare room upstairs and also in the creases of the windows :squigglemouth: So far the container on our dehumidifier hasn't had any water in it. I'm thinking maybe it's defective! We looked @ Sears and they had a $150, $200 and $300 models. I believe they were all energy efficient too but we ended up getting one from a friend. We're in a flood plain and I'm pretty sure the mold was there before we moved in  Anybody ever hire a professional to get rid of it? That may be an option in the future for us.

If it hasn't had any water in it then it's either set up wrong or malfunctioning. I run mine with an outlet hose to my basement sump and I pull off about 2-3 gallons per day. My humididty in my basement runs 65-72% right next to the tank and fortunately I haven't had any issues with mold or any condensation build up on the floor or anywhere else in the basement.

Anyone know where I could send her to get a humidity-meter? (humiditometer? :D )

We use these data loggers at work when temperature and humidity are a concern.

EL-USB-2 | Data Loggers

All the data is recorded on the unit, and then can be displayed on a PC in graph format. The data logger is not plugged into a PC when recording, only to view data.

I thought I heard to not use bleach on mold, so I googled it, and here was the first result...

Oh great! I've only used bleach to clean the mold! So I'm supposed to use borate huh.. I'll have to pick something up with that tonight @ wally world! My mold is tricky though, it doesn't show up in the same places...it travels around the house. Sneaky stuff. :matrix: I guess I can see why the guy gave us the dehumidifier now...stupid thing is broke!

I just bought a small digital humidity meter at wally world, $7 it also has a thermometer attached, and it keeps a record of the high and low humidity

We've got a whole house ERV and it has always kept the humidity under control in the house without using a dehumidifier.

Check the Reptile section of the pet store for a humidity meter. They have some in there for $4-$5 usually. Not the most accurate in the world, but they will give you a ballpark.

Bleach won't make mold stop forming, but it kills the already formed mold off. At least that is what my contact over at Service Master has told me and the Red Cross and CDC promote bleach usage. Bleach is a cheap and easy solution that most people already have on hand.

You can bleach all day long, but if you're not fixing the source moisture problem you'll just get more mold. There are TONS of mold spores in all of our houses all day every day.

Do a search on energy recovery ventilators or ERV's. This is good long term solution. ERV's will exhaust indoor stale humid air and bring in fresh air. It uses the outgoing air to condition the incoming air with an air to air heat exchanger. ...You will also have a healthy home since you are not breathing the same old air every day.

ERV's are very good at providing fresh air. For an aquarium that can help with pH as it decreases indoor CO2. It allows an exchange of fresh outdoor air with stale indoor air while "recovering" about 80% of the heat that would have been lost (winter) or gained (summer).

They are not, however a good way to control summer humidity. About 8-9 months out of the year they will decrease indoor humidity, but in the summer in Wisconsin the outdoor air is more humid than the indoor air (if you have AC) so the ERV will actually increase indoor humidity.

For the summer, the best way is still a dehumidifier. AC will help, but on warm (not hot) humid days, the AC will not run that much and the humidity will climb. The best is to have both.
