Purchased 19th March; the new Deltec SC1456. After 1 month the pump stalls every now, which results in no or poor skimming performance. It turns out the pump cannot deal with fine sand. I used to own a Deltec SC1455 for almost a year and also a TMC reefskim 1000 without this problem. The Deltec MCE400 was also great (I have been reefing for almost 4 years). Reaction Deltec:

Wolfgang, 3 May “Please remember that these modern pumps have a very close bearing tolerance of app 1/100 mm. This is important to achieve quiet operation. Any foreign particles, which may be sucked into the skimmer pump may lead to a blockage or if it is sand, it could damage the pump.

Please take some appropriate measures to ensure (maybe filter sponges) that the pump can only run with clean water”

I informed Deltec that I clean the glass of my tank near the sand bed and also blow of any detritus of my rockwork, of course sand particles will end up in the overflow and skimmer. Apart from that I have a refugium with cheato and caulerpha, I havest this every now and then which also stirs up to bottom a bit. Reaction Deltec:

Wolfgang, 4 May “We are selling over 3000 pcs. of this skimmer model each year and know by experience whether the problems you are describing are due to the quality of the product or are due to some other causes”

The new DC pumps are not suitable for thanks that do not use filterfoam or other mechanical filtration methods than a protein skimmer. Deltec denies this problem and will not help. In the manual the pomp is in the 1st sump section.. I guess this is wrong then? As some sand will inevitably get sucked up by the venturi.. Deltec however, does not mention the use of filterfoam or other pre-filter methods in their manual. Again, the old Deltecs were great in my experience, but this one is just not working. You are warned.

Thats really a shame. Why would they build a pump so sensitive?

I do not know. In the Netherlands there a more people encourting this issue. I used to own 2 Deltecs before (SC1455 and MCE400 hang-on). The aquabees where not sensitive at all, and made me decide to go with the newer pump.. but so far it has been disappointing though.

If you have a kilowatt meter you can check its drawing the appropriate energy that may say something if its not

Well it is easy to tell; the foamhead collapses and will not stabilize unless you take the pump apart and clean it. The noise from the pump will remind you of this in case you did not check the collection cup.

Here a few video before and after cleaning.

I made this grill in the venturi to stop large particles. And a few pictures of the pump during cleaning apart from some fine sand / detritus.. nothing
