I'm in the process of setting up a denitrator for my 250 gallon mixed reef (not sulphur based). Instruction manual says "test for nitrite in two weeks, if nitrite is present from effluent, then there is no need to test nitrate, test again in week 3".

My concern is if nitrite is produced during the "priming" stage of denitrator, does it not hurt livestock in the tank? Anyone with experience please chime in. Thanks in advance!

Low levels of nitrite tend to be ignored, as it’s not harmful at such low concentrations when mixed in the aquarium and quickly gets converted to nitrate in a cycled tank.

Have never heard of this causing an issue in a tank with a sulfur denitrator.
