I’ve had this 4” Derasa for about a month and a half - bought it from a vendor at MACNA. I set it in a brighter spot near the center of my sandbed and besides turning itself a bit (I’m only assuming nothing else turned it), it’s seeming happy. It’s in the sandbed and not on a rock.
In the last few days, I’ve been noticing that it occasionally closes quickly and then reopens several times in a row. Almost like it’s burping or something? It’s not a reaction to anything swimming near or above it, like a reaction to a shadow. Also, there is no gaping in the mouth at all.
Is this normal? The only other thing I think might irritate is that there was a bristle worm under it the other night. I’m assuming it’s living there now. Is that a problem?

I have Derasa clams and mine do that as feeding response when I feed them reef nutrition.. I've always assumed it to be an instant feeding response l. Mine occasionally do it when it's not feeding time as well usually to move for better flow over their mantle.

Good to know! I had noticed it sometimes after I scrape the glass, which would make sense if it’s a feeding response. Free phytoplankton… sort of, lol

That is one interesting looking deresa, I’ve never seen one with patterning like that.
As for burping, I’ve noticed this with my deresa around feeding time and my new maxima also did this when I added him into the tank (Most likely getting rid of air).

The "pumping" is natural and how they get rid of waste and/or food/particulates, etc. If the clam moves, it's finding a more suitable position in regards to light and flow, all natural. Nice clam! If you haven't done so already, buy James Fatherree's new book on clams, tons of great info for all clams lovers.

Thank you!! I’m always looking for good reference books on reef topics. I keep thinking about posting a thread here asking for recommendations.

So I’m obviously not a clam expert but I thought this one was gorgeous and couldn’t pass it up! Do you think it may be a different type of clam than Derasa? I was told it was a Derasa by the vendor.

Looking at the sides, they appear to be soft and not have scutes which is what differentiates deresa from the others in this genus.
