Derasa too much light?

Might be mere coincidence, but look at this, it's extending over the margin already. I haven't had this happen for a whole week now.

I found that my Tomini was also bugging it too, so I had to take that guy out. He was impossible to chase in the daylight, but I found out that he was either blind as a bat or sleepy when the lights were off, and was netted out. I think we're on the path to recovery.

Oh awesome!!!!

I found that rasping tangs got a taste for clam slime too. A bummer. I even had a purple that killed a clam. Happy you got him out ok.

Looking great though!

Amazing what a fish can do to a clam even with no bite marks and being that big.

Any chance you can move that gyre up a bit? I bet you will get better expansion with some less flow. Had a similar problem with a kole.

The frag rack is in the way, and I don't want to move it to the other side of the tank. The flow right under the Gyre isn't too turbulent, so it will be okay. With the Gyres, there isn't a single area that doesn't have high flow!

Id be concerened about the mantle getting into the gyre. A large derasa clam has massive mantle exception. This is what it will end up looking like.

That was the Derasa you lost, right? Such a shame, what a beauty. I crank my flow pretty high for my SPS though, I couldn't get complete flow with one Gyre, but two starts to rip whirlwinds even at low settings. If the mantle shows as much extension as yours, the clam will move towards the center away from the pump, since I don't think the light is the issue anymore. That, or I'll just have to move the frag rack to the back glass, although I really like being able to see my frags up close, lol. It's tough finding a spot for it and the other clams, the sand real estate is either LPS or live rock.

Yup, that is the one I lost. Still bugs me. It took up so much real estate that my tank looked empty. Totally re-did the tank and went straight sps with a few softies. I got two gyrea alternating pulsing at 50%. Built a narrow arch for a derasa away from the flow. Actually got 2 just in case ( 1 from ORA and 1 from Biota). Just need it to grow and fast.

Guess I'll close this off with one last pic. The clam is back to normal now.

Thanks for posting. I have been searching for a specimen clam, and now I am rethinking that acquisition as I have some fish that I underfeed, and do not want to plan on supplementing their diets with fresh clam.
Glad you solved this. The early pictures did not look promising.
