Mastertronic descaling calls for a 0.2 HCL solution. I have Muriatic acid on hand can anyone tell me what dilution I would need to do in order to use this as descaling solution?

If you mean muriatic acid from a hardware store, the dilution will vary depending on what concentration it is. Check the label, and know that it is likely not super accurate so making a 0.2 N HCl solution from it will have error associated with it.

Yeah its the hardware store stuff. Bottle says is 31.45% HCL.

The descaling 0.2 number is apparently a molar ratio which is math I have long forgotten.

Considering its for descaling glass and tubing in the tester I doubt accuracy needs to be super high. I just want to make sure its strong enough to work without going overboard.

Oh, if you are not using it for the titration itself, then yes, it will be fine once diluted. There's nothing special about 0.2 M HCl for that purpose.

31.45% HCl is about 10 M. So if you add one part acid to 49 parts RO/DI, you will get about 0.2 M.

For cleaning pumps and such, I usually use a higher concentration, like 1 M.

I agree, I usually do a 1:10 dilution for cleaning stuff, which apparently is 1M. The manual calls for 0.2 so Ill go with that and see if it gets the job done.

Thanks!

Hello sorry for the bother , I came across this thread and I’m a bit confused. Are you saying I have to use 1 L of the MA and 49 L of rodi to dilute it to 0.02 concentration ? Or are u saying 12oz to 4.5 gallons of water ? The directions say 12oz to every 1 gallon of water for cleaning bricks . Thx for any help.

I gave directions for diluting 10 M HCl to 0.2 M HCl. My directions say one needs a dilution factor of 50, which can be accomplished many ways, but 1 L of acid plus 49 liters of fresh water will do it. So will 12 ounces of acid plus 588 ounces (4.6 gallons).

I don’t know what concentrations are needed for brick cleaning.

Ok wasn’t sure. That was just the directions for the brick and amount needed now I know it one liter to 49 of rodi. thank u

I want to descale my mastertronic…

Do I think If I used 12 oz of my MA 4.6 gallons of water that would give me my 0.02 concentration ? The MA concentration is 31.45

I would not dilute more than the amount I calculated.
