Hello guys

I am starting a new 20g nano tank and want to keep a pair of clowns. Therefore I did some research and looked up all those clown's existing.
The question I have: Why are designer clowns that hyped? Imo some of them look like they have a disease and somehow "ugly"...

I really do not understand that. Am I alone with that thinking?

I think the original clowns look the best.

Honestly I love the frostbite’s just for a little blue flare!(blue being my favorite color) and I love the clown fish’s personality. I don’t mind the natural looking ones but imo I just like the hint/splash of extra.

I agree with some one them looking sick or like they have an illness like some of the phantoms I have seen and a few others. But I see nothing wrong with a good mocha gladiator or even a snowflake.

They are hyped because they are new......if those color varieties were common in the oceans they wouldn't be that sought after....or that expensive. While I do like a lot of the new color varieties, I also appreciate the normal markings of wild clowns. I agree though, there are some ugly ones lol.

I agree, I think most designer clowns are abominations. My GF always says they look like they are being erased. And the long fins? Don’t even get me started.

It depends. I love a nice Grade A (Not the highest level) classic Picasso clown. Especially since they occur in the wild to some extent. Some of the longfins and “zombie” clowns look terrible imo.

I do understand you guys…
I just thought its worth to start a discussion.
That's fair. There are some I like (my avatar), but there are some that look weird to me. I really don't care for the long fin clowns or the variants that are nearly all white; but I love the mocha storms (little tiny cows). As long as we're not talking about unnatural breeding (freshwater parrots) or worse ("glow fish"), I'm OK with them. Definitely just about personal preference. For me, price is also a factor. I'm not about to drop $150-200 on a clownfish. I do have a DaVinci that I got from another reefer which cost about the same a standard occi at the LFS.

well, i must agree.. some really look cool and nice. But there are some breeds which are just an overkill to me. Some, the almost full whites, look just ill to me.

I like designers, but I definitely do not like the longfins. They remind me of bettas. Bettas are cool, but I don't want one in my salt water tank...

Some of them look cool but I agree that I don’t see the point to the hype and inflated prices. I paid $55 each for my blood orange clowns since I was torn between Ocellaris and Maroon but couldn’t see paying these insane prices for designer Ocellaris clowns.

I also think there are far too many types of designer Ocellaris clowns, let’s see some designer maroon clowns. Mostly just curious to see if anyone can pull off new colors or patterns with them. I know there are a few types but never know what is possible.

Curious to see how the colors end up with my blood orange clowns, mostly red with a bit of orange towards the bottom so far but they are only 2”.

Lightening maroons are my absolute favorite of any clown variation. I just couldn't keep them due to tank size and aggression. I am hoping in the future once I have a larger tank, I can finally own a pair.

I'd like to see some pics of your guys favorite and least favorite. I'll be getting my first pair next weekend.

Probably getting more of a natural type or the snowflake.

Here is my pair of black storms. I got them because I thought they looked like fat cows.

I almost went for the lightning maroons, was also considering the Goldxlightning maroon clowns but the blood orange clowns have had me intrigued for a while.
