Two wild thoughts:
1) you need to check PAR because while the blue look is cool, it may not be providing the photosynthesis energy critters need.
2) Check for copper levels in both the tank and in the fresh water. Distilled may come in contact with copper/brass which in theory could impact the cleanup crew.
