Hi, I have two rbta’s on one very large rock. Son we will be upgrading from our current t tank to a 110. We have unwanted pests in our current tank, namely aiptasia and asterinas
Is there any way to get the anemone’s to release from the rock when we are ready to move them to the new aquarium? I really don’t want to transfer that rock with all its pests to my new tank. Also, one of the nems is HIGE and the other is a split off of it. The big one most often is keeping the light from reaching the small one which looks silty a lot of the time but looks fine when not shaded out. You’d think the stupid thing would move but it doesn’t. Neither of them move, the big one just stretches it’s base to open where it wants to. I’d like to move the smaller one to its own rock but I don’t want to damage its foot.

below are pics of the tank. The shot of the whole tank is for perspective on the size of the rock and the large anemone. Another pictures shows the baby and how it’s being blocked from light by the parent anemone. Shot a picture of one of the aiptasias but I have several that have popped up. And finally a random pic of my cool arrow crab

I know this is a little off topic but I always had good luck with CBB to control Aptasia. My tank has a lot Aptasia in the plumbing and in the plumbing and in the sump but none in DT because to my CBB. I take rocks full of Aptasia up to DT as treat for him once in a while and he clean them out in a few weeks.
It is really strange looking at him eating Aptasia. I guess it would be just the same as watching a money eating very hot pepper. He would take a peck at the Aptasia and would jerks and shakes his bill as he swallow the aptasia. Sometime he would darts a few inches. All of this give an appearance of him eating something that is very noxious and difficult to taste. It must be an acquired taste because he cannot help but eating them and the rock would be clean in a few days.

There's a sticky in the anemone forum on how to safely remove. That being said there are other things to consider. If starting with all new rock in the new tank your nems won't be happy. If the tank isn't allowed to mature first you will most likely lose the nems. As far as pests there and plenty of ways to manage. Aiptasia can be managed with peppermint shrimp and file fish. Harlequin shrimp will make quick work of asterina.

I had amazing success using Berghia Nudibranches from reeftown.com to eradicate an out of control aiptasia infestation. You have to be patient to allow the nudibranchs to lay eggs and multiply (I think mine took 4 weeks), but when their population gets to critical mass it takes out the pests overnight! Unless you find a way to maintain a culture of them (they ONLY eat Aiptasia) this is a one time fix, so if you add additional live rock or introduce more pests after that you would have to go through the process again.

We would definitely prefer to move the rock to the new tank. Got the arrow crab for the bristle worms and a couple of peppermints for the aiptasia but have had them less than a week so still waiting g to see if they’ll take care of it. The nem I really want to move to o e of our other rocks is the one that is missing out on light. Don’t know why it doesn’t move itself.

Nems go where they want. It decides the best situation better than you can. FWIW I feel asterina and bristleworms are free CuC.

Soorry noobie here. What is a CBB?

ok for your question, you can remove the rock with the anemone on it. get yourself some q-tips and slowly remove the foot from the rock. start on the edge and brush the foot. take your time. i repeat take your time. once you start peeling it off. it becomes easier. I just need this Sunday night with 4 different anemones for the same reason. i bought a full setup and it has bubble algae like crazy. i was sick of looking at it so it was time to be removed from the tank.

not the focus of this post but bristle worms and astras aren’t pests by the way.

I do t mind them in moderation but the bristleworms especially got out of hand
That's due directly to maintenance. They only get crazy if there's enough food for them.

I spent 7 weeks in the hospital a year ago then another 5 weeks over the summer and the nutrient level got really high because my husband was way overfeeding the tank. The arrow crab made fast work of knocking them back
