Triton test results show lithium levels way out of whack-2500+ vs. the recommended 200. Will Detox and/or GAC remove lithium? If not, how should I get the levels down?
And how on earth would I get such elevated levels?
TIA

Before you go about trying to remove it I would first find out if it is causing a problem or not.

Meh. I'm unimpressed. My Li was 4451!

I'm pretty sure my extreme Li came in via my ice melt grade magnesium chloride used for the magnesium part of Randy's DIY 2-part. I've since switched brands of magnesium chloride. I'm pretty sure neither Detox nor GAC will remove lithium. I'm unaware of any adverse side effect of my elevated lithium levels, but I would like to stop it from rising any more, and do plan to eventually bring it down over time with water changes.

I don't believe that products like Detox can do anything for lithium since it looks chemically very like sodium, yet sodium is present at more than ten thousand times the concentration. That's also why I don't think the usual levels of "elevated" lithium that reefers typically find are a concern. :)

Ok, thanks, that does make me feel better . All my invertebrates seem to be ok, but my sps are suffering. I wasn't sure if this could be the cause.
I've always used BRS additives, I've never heard of problems with any of the three. I wonder if it could possibly be in the tap water and the RO/DI doesn't pull it out?
I checked our area's water quality report, and Li wasn't listed as tested for .

I had elevated Lithium at 951.40 ug/l in June and upped my water changes to 12 gallons per day on a 550 gallon system. My recent test showed 478.40 ug/l. Dilution can be the Solution.

Aluminium based Phosphate remover will remove lithium. Of course it takes phosphate as well so you have to check so your phosphate level doesnt go to zero.

It was Eshan Dashi of Triton that mentioned it in the questioning after his speech in Gothenburg, Sweden last year.

He guys, havn´t been here for a while.... sorry very busy.
Anyway I don´t think Li will be effected by Al based PO4-Removers, or DETOX.
Just to make sure nobody buys them for that reason.

I am not sure if I have said that in the Q&A.
But I am very sorry about it, if I should have done that or what I have said has been a bit ambiguous.
All the Best Ehsan

Ehsan,
Are you adding any amino acids to you show tank.
My Euphyllia hasn't grown at all in a year.
SPS corals are doing great.

I had high lithium. Changed to Tropic Marin pro reef salt and performed 10% weekly water changes. Eventually got it down to the suggested level.

My tank has run for over 8 months with 2000+ lithium levels (came from Tech-M dosing) with zero signs of problem. Clams, lots of high end SPS, LPS, zoas, frags, etc. Only thing I don't really have is leather coral. I really don't think high lithium impacts anything in most reef tanks.
