What is detritus chemically? Im wondering how much nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon is in detritus? Isnt detritus just a fancy word for left over organics?

In my system im thinking of unplugging the skimmer and letting the algae turf scrubber do all the work. But my concern is detritus. If i allow it to build up is it going to cause major problems?

Im tired of cleaning the skimmer cup and it stinks like h2s too. Ive already whent without the filter socks because i dont want to clean it either lol. And so far the tank looks the same as it did without it, its been a two weeks sock free.

Ive got a few corals frags which are doing good so far. A birdsnest and acropora. There is also a few others cant remember the names.

I've not seen an actual chemical analysis of the detritus in reef aquaria, but it is generally thought to be partly organic and partly inorganic (little bits of calcium carbonate, silica, etc.)

Residual detritus will slowly break down and release nutrients, but you can overcome it with adequate export. I just let it accumulate in my sump and refugia. It is a thick mud layer. That said, I'm not trying for an especially low nutrient system.

How about fresh fecal matter? What kind of nutrients are we talking?

I want to know if i add 10 grams of pellets, how much dry algae would i need to export to remove it?

You mean food pellets or fecal pellets?

Like fish poop lol. Fecal pellets. But originally i meant fish food( pellets)

Lol yeah, gotta be careful with those pellets, they might blast a hole through the glass.

In two months ive probably fed 35grams of pellets. Im curious how much algae that would take to remove it all in grams.
