DETRITUS... its like a dirty word in the hobby. like it or not its dirty yes... but not a dirty word. :) So like most of us I have pumps in my sump and the detritus collects in this area. like most I try and clean it out as much as I can. However, in between cleaning there is constant accumulation. which leads to my question.

one of my pumps that feeds a reactor sucks in the detritus right into the reactor clogging the media. was wondering what people are doing to counteract the detritus from getting into the reactor chambers to begin with? thanks

I’m using a eheim pump. There’s a sponge around the intake that gathers all the crap, to be honest with you it’s a pain in the butt.... it would be a pain if all that crap went into the reactor as well. It just means opening the cover 2-3 times a week to clean it out and then the feed pipes get undone, the normal headache, a 2min job takes 20 minutes.

thanks for the input... I guess I should have been more clear. I was looking for more of a permanent solution to the detritus dilema... a permanent detritus trap if such a thing actually exists?

The only thing that could possibly help is filter sock and then floss between the baffles before the chamber that’s housing the reactor. Siphon while doing water changes and weekly water changes all the above will help but you might find your still getting a bit of build up, it’s all about maintenance.

Hard to keep detritus out of reactors. You could try positioning the feed pump at the output of your skimmer. Skimmers actually do a pretty good job of removing particulates.

Hey everyone... thanks for the input. I found the answer i was looking for last night just browsing the TUBE. I DO NOT run socks as I am a believer that corals need food in the water column 24/7. I just needed a better way to clean the sump as all the detritus finds its way to the lowest point in the tanks and for most of us that means the sump.

for those that do the same thing this is for you...

I use 50 micron socks that don't let most detritus through. I also have a small powerhead in the sump to keep detritus suspended in the skimmer area. Then, my reactor has a foam prefilter on the pump. It's an MJ pump and they sell the pack of 2 pre filters on BRS.

well I dont shop there... so many better places IMHO. Anyway, i dont like socks because it polishes the water too well and takes out all the coral food with the detritus. i much prefer to have an automated way to clean the sump from accumulated detritus when needed than running socks. I used to run socks and know the diff. and tremember the socks would clog and overflow anyway leaving detritus in the sump anyway.

You want to give us an overview instead of driving people to your YouTube channel ?

Cheers

well I have been in the hobby for 21 years and I hope in that time I have an overview to give, lol. And... that's not my you tube channel. All this from a guy who drives people to his build thread by linking to it in his signature? ;) Sorry was there something constructive you wanted to add?
