A recent test at the lab where I work has confirmed that I have detectable amounts of DHMO (dihydrogen monoxide) in my well water. DHMO has been implicated in having a role in the formation of various types of cancers, and is present in significant amounts in virtually all types of malignant tumors. Also known as hydric acid, its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters.
Numerous State and Federal agencies have laws and/or policies in effect regulating the control, transport, management, and/or release of DHMO into waterways by both government and private industry.
Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage. Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns. Accidental inhalation of even small amounts can cause death.
DHMO is able to pass through RO/DI filters readily, so I am unable to remove it from my well water that way.
I'd like to know what effects DHMO might have on the livestock in my aquarium -- are there any published studies on potential toxicity to invertebrates? Is there anything I should worry about? Is there anything I can do to mitigate the dangers?
