Purchased 2 Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera) over the weekend and they both looked great. They have been in QT for 3 days. Eating well, pooping and seem generally happy. I was not treating them with anything for the first few days in order to make sure they were eating. Today I awoke to one of them looking like there is an issue. Possibly velvet? The white marking I am speaking of is the vertical area along the black stripe on the fish. I have some terrible pictures but there the best I can get. Anyone that could give me some insight on what's happening and what I can do would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Darren

The pictures are not very clear, but the large white stripe looks more like a bacterial infection than velvet. I’d treat quickly, a 90-minute acriflavine bath (ruby reef rally) followed by a 10-day course of a broad spectrum antibiotic.

Have you noticed any other symptoms? Scratching, yawning, twitching, head-shaking? Bacterial infections are often secondary to parasites, a freshwater dip to check for flukes might be a good place to start.

Being new to the hobby I am only minimally prepared on medical supplies. I have Cupramine and General Cure on hand. Not sure where I can rapidly get any other medication. I have not noticed any other symptoms like you have mentioned. Possibly a fresh water dip (as suggested) followed by a course of General Cure would be a good start?

Yes if the FWD confirms Flukes this would be a great start!

Did you FWD yet?

The fish has passed away that afternoon before any treatment was able to be administered. I can see by this first experience that purchasing a fish that’s healthy and keeping it alive through QT is going to be a difficult process.
