Can they be kept together or will the diamond outcompete the Mandarin for pods? I don't even have the tank for them yet, so still several months out, but just wondering as I plan out a stocking list. The mandarin will be tank bred and eating frozen/dry food

The Diamond goby doesn't just eat pods, it's eating all different types of micro-fauna in the sand. You can do it if you dont have a small tank(40 or bigger would be "easier" 100 gallon+ would be easiest). I have a dragonet pair and a large Diamond goby in my 120 along with a Dusky wrasse and Ornate Leopard wrasse, all pod eaters. The Diamond goby and the male scooter will "fight" sometimes, but more for territory then food IMO and they can't really hurt each other, the Diamond goby generally uses it big mouth to just move the scooter blenny. I have a bigger issue with my male scooter always trying to fight my lawnmower blenny.

There are lots of fish that will snack on pods throughout the day, but they won't out compete the Mandarin assuming you have a sufficient supply.

ok cool, wasn't really sure what the diets looked like between the two so glad to know they can coexist!

Mind you, "sufficient supply" is a LOT of pods. Mandarins eat hundreds of pods a day on their own, never mind what other fish will gladly do.
