Hi. I bought a diamond goby to help keep my sand clean. He is doing a great job but he is taking so much sand from under the rock that it is starting to cover my corals. Should I scoop out some of the sand or would that hurt the tank? Originally I put in 10 lbs of live sand in my 20 gal Red Sea nano tank.

Unfortunately, the diamond sleeper/diamond watchman goby will always be the master of your sandbed. He has the blueprint and makes sure the build is to his specs. No matter what coral I have placed on my sandbed, I have had to move it to a different tank due to my goby wanting to move it or cover it up. A month ago, I dropped a cyphastrea frag in the sand and was going to go back and get it when I was finished cleaning powerheads. Well, I completely forgot. A few days ago I remembered and was looking for it. This guy took it under his favorite base rock. It was still alive and had great color. The diamond sleeper goby has amazing character and personality. Your sandbed will always be his artwork.
Happy reefing!

I just thought if there is less sand he won’t be able to make such big piles. He has taken over the tank.

I have all the same issues with Mr. Attitude. He did not cover my kriptonite candy cane I had in the sand for a while. Finally moved it because the conch would knock it over. I puts the sand back into the areas he digs out, just so he can start again. Usually after doing that he comes to the front of the tank when I am near and we have a stare down, hopefully he thinks it is as much fun as I do

They will stare into your soul and let out a big exhale. It's hilarious. Definitely a fish favorite.
