I have a 105g DT and was interested in introducing a diamond goby. I QT all of my fish in a 20g long and three days ago I introduced what appeared to be a healthy goby. I prepped the tank by putting a tupperware dish of sand from my DT, plus I seeded with a bag of matrix rocks from my DT to minimize any cycling risk. The goby was the only fish in QT. A quick note on my QT process: I have successfully QT'd three fish: two clowns, three anthias and two tangs. I observe the fish and treat only if something presents itself, and I have successfully treated internal parasites and ich. Until the diamond goby I was batting 1.000 on successfully transitioning fish from my QT to my DT.
Onto the diamond goby. I floated the bag and drip acclimated him for 45 minutes and introduced him to the QT with the lights off. He was shy like any new fish for the first day, but the afternoon of the second day, he was actually in the sand-filled tupperware dish. He was not sifting sand--just seemed to be chilling. I fed a little frozen brine and he seemed to be aware food was in the tank, but did not eat any of it that I saw. I checked on him when I went to bed last night and when I woke up this morning he was dead on the bottom of the tank. I immediately checked my parameters:
Amm - 0.0
Nitrite - 0.0
Nitrate - 5
Salinity - 1.024
Temp - 82
The only thing that looks out of whack to me was the temperature. My cheap plastic thermometer read 79, but when I checked with my Hanna digital thermometer it read 82. I blame this totally on me, but these eheim heater temp gauges seem to allow for significant fluctuation.
Anyway, do you think the higher temp could have caused him to die? Any other thoughts on QT'ing diamond gobies, because I'm going to try again.
Thank you!
