No. They need a sand bed with enough biomass (either dead or alive) to sustain itself. That being said, you can spot feed them or bury shrimp in the sand, and they tend to eat voraciously. I'm keeping one temporarily in an four month-old Evo build with one big rock it can't tip over. Still, many reefers have reported a high die-off rate with these in anything less than a large, established tank. I suppose it just depends if you can get one which will accept any foods it doesn't find in the sandbed.
