I currently have a bicolor blenny in my tank and I was wondering if I got this fish would they be able to share the bottom of the tank. I have a 40 gallon breeder. Also, I was reading that you should have live sand and a refugium. How important are those to the survival of the fish? I bought regular sand and dry rock and cycled my tank that way ( a year ago ).

Sand becomes live over time. Have you added anything that would have introduced some pods?

A lot of the shrimp gobies only use sand for burrowing, but the diamond watchman is not one of them. They actually get pretty big (for gobies) and will constantly be munching on the sand in the search of food. I don't know if they ever eat prepared/frozen options. Hopefully someone else can answer that.

Mine eat frozen

I had one. He wss a character but he kept creating sandstorms nonstop eating and spitting sand. I was not able to keep anything on the sandbed. Always burrowing under rock work which is dangerous because my rock was not glued. He loved LRS frozen food. Frozen mysis. He ate everything.

Mine did the same thing when I first got him. Buried every corals on sand bed. He stopped now.... don't know what happened

They will get up to 7". Most are not picky eaters and will eat frozen immediately and can learn to eat pellets. They frequently bury anything on the sand. A tight cover is necessary, as they are accomplished jumpers. A refugium should not be necessary.

I had a diamond watchman for a while and loved him. Woke up one day and he was belly up. Never figured out why and I loved that fish

Love my Diamond Goby. As stated above they are known to jump out so make sure to have a cover. He will create sandstorms once in a while but for the most part he just stays in his burrow. Mine eats frozen mysis as well

I'd love to get one to clean my sand, but I have that Oolite very fine sand and don't think it would be a good idea. Anybody have one with Oolite...constant sand storms?

I have had two Diamonds. The first one ate Mysis, pellets, and flake (as well as sifting the sand non-stop). I had him jump once during a water change. Luckily I was there and threw him back in. Ended up losing him to my lunare wrasse (killed him and ate him in half).

Still have one currently in my 265. He constantly sifts the sandbed looking for pods. He also eats Mysis, pellets, and flakes. He will flare up a little at my maroon clown when he starts sifting near the clown's nem. Also have a mandarin, a six-line, and a melanurus wrasse in the same tank with no problems.

They're cool fish "IF" you don't have any sand bed corals. When they sift the sand, they do it @ mid-level of your tank. So what ever is below it is going to get sand on/in it. The one I had covered up all of my chalices everyday. Constantly get turkey baster out to clear the sand off. Not worth it in my situation.

I was thinking of getting one to clean the sand bed but didn't realize they can get so big. Anyone know of another sand sifter which stays on the small side?
