It should not be lasting this long. Have you checked your phosphate levels?

A protein skimmer is always a good idea to remove waste and also oxygenate the water. If phosphates are an issue running some GFO in a reactor or even in a mesh bag can help a lot. Most times diatoms will burn themselves out in time. In my experience they're usually caused by silicates getting in from your water source or from using old bulbs. I've also seen them bloom from a change to new bulbs, change of light spectrum I guess?
