Does anyone use a vortex diatom canister filter? If so how do they work? Worth using? How bad is the cleaning of it?

I bought one because they will remove down to 1 micron. Even ich parasites can be trapped.
However its one of those "new powerhead" types and i couldnt get it to work properly. I think the problem was that the impeller needed to be started from getting stuck.
