I have some diatoms growing in my refugium (r-100 sump) and running the par 38 refugium light when the tank light is off. any ideas on how to get the diatom down? Thanks.

P.S light:

Have you introduced anything new into the tank recently?

More importantly, any reason you're trying to get rid of the diatoms? Every time I've had a diatom growth spurt (unrelated to a new tank), it's because I introduced some silica or other new organic and the diatoms just have to consume it until they burn themselves out. It would seem like a good thing that this is happening in your refugium compared with your DT. How long has this been going on?

It started growing about when I turned the light on, I guess I can wait it out again. Thanks for the info

I got diatoms and slime algae when I initially started my fuge. Not sure why, but it didn't last long.

How do you know you have diatoms?

I agree with this question.

I have been studying the composition of the algae film that grows on my glass. It is a complex bio-system that includes many diatoms. Nerite snails plow through it keeping the glass quite clear. (However, I don't know what the snails eat and what they just move.)
