Curious as to why a DE filter wouldn't be more common place in the industry? I come from a pool and spa background and DE can filter down to 3 micron which needless to say is pretty fine particulates. Is there some sort of reaction or does it put out anything to make it unsafe? Does it make anything deplete or grow? It seems like it would be used more.

I'm going to take a guess and says it's because it's silicon dioxide, which could potentially feed diatoms if it breaks down into the water column.

They are used occasionally, if you search you will find some threads on them. I think the main issue is they are too efficient and scrub the water too clean to be in use full time.
