Diatoms after 7 months.

So long story short, I found I have a large spot of what I believe is Diatoms in the corner of my tank. I used a turkey baster on the sand it was a dusty brown mess essentially. So my question is how can they come back after almost 5 to 6 months after it cycled? Any wisdom is greatly appreciated.
